Thanks for the comments. I went with the 2” Rock Tamer from Amazon, also. I also ordered the hitch stabilizer. New truck shipped this week and the new Montana is supposed to come off the line today.

Thanks, Lynwood. Terrie and I agonized on whether we should spend the money. Then you look back at when we joined the MOC back in 2004. Many of the people that we met at the first years of rally are no longer with us, or have left the road. So, we are making sure everything is right on this one. No “I wish we would have gotten’ that”. Everything is being done with an eye toward safely and comfortably going to Alaska again.

I don't like to do anything the easy way, so i built my own, that are very similar to these:
https://www.agricover.com/rockstar/
I didn't need/want the ball sticking thru, so mine is totally flat on the back.
This picture is on our 2002 Chevy, and one thing I will say, though, on our
2020 Chevy, after the first 40 minute trip, I decided that I needed to add a heat shield to the exhaust side. I just about melted the mudflap on exhaust side. During a regen, the exhaust is HOT coming out of there, so keep that in mind, with whatever you get...

After market exhaust for GM

You can buy a new tailpipe section for GM heavy duty that routes the exhaust to the side with a nice chrome end. One fitted piece, detach old pipe at muffler and put on, less than an hour work, a few hundred dollars and problem solved, did it on my 2020 3500 Denali and works great.

The newer Fords, I have a 2017 all came with a 3” receiver, that you couldn’t find anything for at the time. But the truck came with a reducer to 2 1/2” then you could use that or reduce to 2”.

Rock Tamers on the silverado. A nice 5” chrome 90 degree clamp-on extension via Amazon keeps the rubber from melting.

Does that just clamp to the existing pipe? The pipe on ours actually has some air inlets into that final piece of exhaust that you can't block or remove. If you do, the tailpipe gets hot enough to melt that plastic step piece in the bumper...

You are discovering one of the many reasons that I went with the Towtector w/Heatshield option. I'm interested in hearing back from the oversized mud flap users after a few months of over-the-road use - How many stone chips from that big space in the middle?

I built mine for my 2002 truck initially, and on that truck, I only had the trailer plug below the bumper. I initially wanted to build them with the rubber all the way across, but I had to at least leave a hole to get the plug thru. I also couldn't find any rubber that was wide enough to go all the way across, so I got about the widest mud flaps that I could find, and that's what I used.
With that being said, knock on wood, I haven't see any rock chips on the front of our unit, either sides or middle, so I feel like they are doing something.
While I suppose that it's possible to get a rock thru the middle, I would be less worried about that, than the direct line of fire of the tire...

Rock Tamers
After a winter trip across the Syskiyou mountains a couple years ago I bought the Rock Tamer mud flaps. They work great and the optional heat reflector works great for Duramax powered Chevys.

Do the ends hit the trailer in a tight turn?

Rock Tamers for us as well. Even when I purchased the new truck which is higher in the rear than the old; I just called and ordered a new set of rubbers and new hardware. Easy/Peasy. I also use the Anti-Rattle brackets and square U Bolts. With the new class 3 or 5 hitches you'll need to purchase a bit longer U Bolts which can be found at most any Automotive Store.
Happy Trails

Hummmm....
That's an interesting question, that I do NOT know the answer to.
I'm going to go out on a limb, and say no, and the only reason I'm saying no is that they are modeled after an existing product, with the width being the same as the one that I modeled them after. I'm assuming that the factory built ones do not hit, but I have no data to back that up.
However, that IS something that should check to make sure.
Thanks for the heads up!!

The extension just fits onto the last 1-1/2 inches of the pipe. It slips on and I used an aircraft-style clamp plus a couple of sheet metal screws (just in case). The function of the air inlets is maintained. This seemed to me a better solution than the heat shield that Rock Tamer offers. When I get home tomorrow, I will try to find the link to Amazon.

Well, I ordered my Rock Tamers but they keep rescheduling the delivery. For some reason UPS and Amazon can’t figure out how to get through 4’ of snow. If I could get out of my drive, I’d go get it myself. Just kidding, about UPS and Amazon. Our roads may not be clear enough to drive on for a few more days. Same for my drive. Need to get cleared so my wife can go to town for her second Covid shot.
