Tire Disaster despite G614's

So, put G614's on several months ago - about 8000 trouble free miles until today. Pulled into Brookings, OR at the front end of a three week trip for lunch - saw rear drivers side G614 flat. Called Good Sam - G614 somehow picked up 1/2 of a scissor blade - ripped tread apart - not fixable.

Long story short found out Marathon spare is a 215 not a 235 so would not install the spare - claimed safety issue putting smaller tire with 3 other 235/R16s. To my dismay, I had never looked at the spare! To tire shop - no G614's available in area, would have to order - so now have $167 10 ply Cooper tire. Will pick up new G614 in Coos Bay, OR next week, and will move new tire to spare - if it lasts that long! So - will be about a $600 expense not covered by anything!

Plan to call my dealer about improperly sized spare - Label on trailer calls for 235/R16's for all five tires!

Good info about checking the spare, after the dealer had ours mounted and knowing that we had paid the difference on five tires, I crawled beneath the rig to verify the spare had been replaced as well. A good heads up for the MOC.

We just had a thread where someone thought they'd keep the Marathon for a spare. Here's a good example of why it's not a good idea.

A mismatched spare. Another example of cost cutting for a buck or two per unit sale.

It may cost a little more to have five tires vs four but it is the safest.

That was me..I just had the G614's put on and have a Marathon spare...I guess I have to re-think this strategy! Thanks for the heads-up!

I know my spare is the right size. But only because 2 years ago, I noticed that I didn't have one. Some sweet soul decide he needed my spare more than me, so he took it. I got a replacement Cooper and wheel at Tire Warehouse and wrapped a security cable around the wheel and spare mount. Now if I can just find the key to the cable....

Does not matter what you are running (for tires), road hazards are out there looking for us. Glad your issue did not include damage to your Montana.

What would be wrong though to use a mismatched spare to just get you off the hwy and to civilization to get a new tire. I run LT's and there is not that much difference in size and I can get a LT tire any where. Not like I would have to order one so replacement would be easy. Definitly would not use it for hundreds of miles or as a permmant replacement till go done with a trip.

The 215 sized spare was no doubt mistakenly put on by an installer at the factory. Keystone has units that run 215s (Cougar) on six lug wheels, and the tire likely got mixed into a batch of 235s. Perhaps even the High Country model runs 215s? Now I don't know what would be worse. The error on something that simple and obvious, or throwing on a 215 intentionally to save a couple bucks???
