Hello from California

Hello all!! We just bought a 2020 Montana 3780 fifth wheel trailer (3rd since 2004) and Ford F350 DRW Super Duty Crew Cab and registered on this forum. Love the rig. We also love this forum and looking forward to learning from and sharing our experience with everyone on this forum.

Welcome to the net. New here also. Were about in California? Used to live in Los Angeles (Van Nuys) and then San Diego (Ramona) until we moved to the east (North Carolina)

Welcome...I trust you are aware that because of the GVWR on your new rig, California requires you to have a non-commercial class A license. If you're already there, safe travels...if not...don't get stopped for other reasons to have some LEO check to find you are not legally licensed to pull that 5vr in California!

You are correct..............a Noncommercial Class A license is required for travel and fifth wheel trailers weighing over 10,000 and 15,000 lbs GVWR not used for hire respectively.

To obtain an original noncommercial Class A license adults must:
• Complete an application for a driver license (DL 44)
• Pay the application fee ~$37
• Submit a Health Questionnaire (DL 546)
• Pass basic Class C law test unless renewed Class C license in last 12 mo
• Pass the Recreational Vehicles and Noncommercial Class A Trailers law test
• Pass a vision test
• Pass a pre-trip inspection test
• Pass the skills test - tests include demonstration of your skill in stopping, backing in a straight line, completing a right turn around a cone or marker, and backing into a camping space
• Pass driving test while towing the fifth wheel trailer - test includes entering and exiting a freeway, freeway driving with lane changes, right and left turns into one-way and two-way traffic, railroad crossings, and driving on a grade or steep hill, etc.

That "pre-trip inspection test" caused me some grief...didn't initially get detail specific enough for the examiner. It wasn't enough to just say: "I'm checking the lights"...had to point out and say each and EVERY light, every lug nut, every minute item that needed to be checked...failed the first go around and had to reschedule for another "pre-inspection test" that made me wait 60 days to retake! I'm thinking a bit of overkill on the part of the examiner...just sayin'

Richard,

Thanks very much for the tip!! I also gound an excellent thread on what a member on this forum weny through in CA and t provided a lot of insight. Have a new class c license renewed within last year so should not have to take the driver's written test AND have taken the trailer endorsement test so taking that test again should be easy. Plan to make an appointment for that test to get a temporary permit tomorrow, if the CA DMV offices are open. Only then can I schedule the pre-driving, skills and driving tests.

Now you know why I move out of California. anything to make a buck. When I did my pre check test I looked, touched, opened, and talk about what I was doing that the tester said to shut up and drive.

Charlie,

Great pre-trip inspection strategy!! That strategy worked well for me when I was tsking my UK driving license driving test n 2016 while living in Wales.

One important issue I didn't think to mention before...I was warned ahead on this for my trip to DMV for the "testing"...BE SURE YOU ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A CLASS A LICENSE HOLDER WHEN YOU GO TO DMV...The rules are you must have that person with you at ALL times you are learning to pull/drive with the 5vr, which includes when you make that pulling trip to whatever DMV location you go to. If that person is not with you, you are subject to failure since you are not legally licensed to drive/pull without that person with you. In my case, the examiner asked and had to see the license of the person who went with me, explaining the above as she checked his license status. Don't know if I just had to deal with someone who has to follow every letter to all the regs or she just doesn't like her job...but something to be aware of...FYI...and GOOD LUCK WITH IT!
