Question Generator

New 2017 3721 want use a Honda eu7000is generator to run unit with 2 15k btu ac's and lights and tv. Is this possible with this generator. I've been told it can be done with a 30amp 3 prong to a 4 prong plug. Which is plugged into my 4 prong power cable. This is done with the 240 v button pushed on the generator. Is this right or am I going to blow up my trailers electronics.

Sorry I can't give you the answer that you are looking for. The 5500 Onan is rated for two Air conditioners and some extra so you should be able to run 7000 and easily power two air conditioners. I would guess by your post that it only has one 30a receptacle. I would guess that you are only going to light up one hot wire with 30 amps. The 50 amp cord brings in two legs each at 110/125. Maybe Honda has some kit to redo their generator so it would do two hot leads each at 35 amps or something like that.

Why not make an adapter to convert the 4 wire 120/240 volt 30 amp generator outlet to a female RV 4 wire 120/240 volt 50 amp receptacle. That will give you 30 amps on each leg instead of only having a single 30 amp leg shared with both of your hot legs. Isn't that why you spent so much money on that big generator? If your rig is wired properly, each A/C will be on opposite hot legs, and you should be good to go.

Rather than risk making a mistake, call Honda.

Agree with rohrmann - RVs are wired with 50 amp service actually being two separate 30 amp circuits and that's the only way you can power two 15k btu air conditioners. That genset should easily be able to pull them but not on a single 30 amp circuit. It's 120/240 twist lock connector will give you those two circuits if you wire them correctly.

You need a 30 amp 4 wire twist lock plug NEMA L14-30P along with a Camco #55353 50 amp female replacement plug or equivalent other brand, and a length of 4 wire #8 or #10 extension cord cable, usually available at the big box stores or most hardware stores. That will be all the parts needed to assemble your adapter to connect your generator. Just follow the directions for each plug, green for both for the ground, white for each for the neutral, and the other two, usually a black and a red for the hot legs, and it doesn't make any difference which goes to either terminal. You will have your adapter.

I'm really surprised that no one has asked where this Honda will be in relation to the Montana when it is running.

Another side note about this generator. Beware, that even though this is a large unit, in the 120/240 volt mode, it is only rated 22.9 amps per leg continuous,or 5500 Watts, so you still have to be a bit careful with your loads, and this includes balancing those loads too. A full 50 amp RV service is capable of 12,000 Watts of load, so you still can't get everything to work at the same time like you could being plugged into a normal 50 amp outlet.
