Larry, I would go over to the Cummins Forum and ask there. Get a beverage, cause you will be there all night.

http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/

Me, Rotella 15/40 every 5K miles.

How much fuel do you get in your oil now? I know a guy with a 2009 2500 Dodge Cummings that when he checked it he had 5% fuel in his oil at 5000 miles. Before these DPFs the industry standard was 2% max. My 2008 Ford had 13% at 7000 miles after a 5000 mile trip pulling my Montana.
What do I think? You probably can guess.

Don't do it. It cost me a engine. The engine slugged up and was too bad to try to clean it. I feel the 1 year 25,000 mile oil change is too long. There is no way to get the contaminants out of the engine. Draining the oil is the best way to rid the engine of those. I think the oil is fine just not the duration.

I'm not sure what is prompting you to considering this, but think of it this way;
Depending on the interval you now change your oil, is it worth saving the cost of two or three oil changes to risk the cost of replacing a motor?
In my case, an oil change costs me about $68.00 using Royal Purple oil and an AC Delco filter and 30 minutes of my time. Using the oil life monitor to tell me when to change the oil, I get 8500 to 9000 miles on a LOF. To me, the cost savings would never be worth the risk.

Rondo ... if you get your engine oil analized on a diesel, there is most always a low percentage of diesel fuel suspended in it ... that's part of running diesels. Thats also why I would consider Amsoil, but never run any kind of milage or time that the OP questioned. I'm also a Rotella 15/40 at 5K kind of guy.

Here is my last Blackstone Oil report. My fuel is .5% and you want it lass than 2%. But, since this is still a new engine my metals are still high, thus I will be changing mine every 4-5K.

There is certainly nothing wrong with Amsoil, however I'd like to point out a few things. Amsoil does not make their own oil stock, they buy it and add their own additives. Where do they buy it from? Mobil. I started out using Amsoil, along with their by pass filtration system on our 06 Silverado, but quickly realized that when traveling, I needed to carry extra oil with me because not everyone carries Amsoil. Depending on where you are, you might not be able to get Amsoil should you need to add oil or get your oil changed. So I went back to Mobil 1, which can be found everywhere. Note the availability issue also applies to some other oils like Royal Purple.

Synthetic oil can go extra miles but to protect your engine, get the oil analyzed near the factory recommended oil change time/mileage. Doing so not only tells you how well the oil and its additives are holding up, the report may become a needed item should you experience a warranty issue.

Rondo. Fuel in the oil. I had 13%. I have heard of 18+ quarts coming out of an engine you only put 15 quarts in. It is usually caused by the DPF. That is where my problem came from. It can also be caused by a leaky injector. Our neighbors 06 Dmax had this problem. It cost him an engine. It burned a hole in one of his pistons. If you get way to much fuel in the oil it can cause a run away engine. It starts sucking the oil out of the crank case into the combustion chambers. There is no way to stop it. It will either run out of fuel or blow it's self up which is more likely.

Once a year oil change is great if you swap trucks once a year. Clean oil is the best thing you can do for any engine. Oil in a diesel engine gets nasty quick, even if synthetic such as rotella T6

Extended oil change intervals became popular with synthetic oils that do not degrade with heat and shear wear. In pre-low-nox emissions engines, with lower pressure fuel injection and the absence of fuel injection in the exhaust stroke to clean the DPF, bypass filtration was added to remove small particulate, combustion blow-by carbon from the oil. With increased fuel dilution in the crankcase in the post low nox emissions engines, extended oil change intervals are not recommended.

I think that if you had your oil analyzed and see safe fuelil dilution you are OK. I do not know anyone who has experimented with adding filters and running extended intervals on these new engines. My BIL ran synthetic oil up to 60k miles in a '92 cummins.

Oil and changes have always been a hot topic, and always will be. For myself, experience, reading test reports, etc, have helped me decide. Test reports, etc, notwithstanding, years ago I had a Toyota 4X4 pickup, with the turbo diesel in it. I suffered a timing belt failure and had to have a new head installed. The mechanic called me and asked when I'd had the cam bearings changed, as they were like new. I said NEVER, and this was at 70,000 miles. He asked what oil was I using, and I said Delo 400, 15-40. He simply said don't change what you are doing.

I use Rotella T petroleum base and Wix filters in my Cummins. and change every 3000 miles. and after I hit 200,000 miles I will change to Rotella T synthetic. and I use Wix filters in everything I drive. I have people say I'm wasting my money changing that often, but with all my trucks and autos the body wears out before the engine. and the cost to change the oil myself is $45 for my Cummins and $15 for my cars.

I've got a friend that recently got a MH with an 8.9L Cummins. His manual says to change it annually or at 20,000 miles which ever comes first. Also says type oil makes no difference...dino or synthetic...still annually/20k.

On edit, I change mine annually or when the on board computer says to change it.
