When we decided to go full time, we did a lot of research on where to have our domicile. Having a mail forwarding service was key. This is copied from the Americas Mailbox site, which is the service we went with, both for mail and to be our legal domicile. So, this speed trap thing is one more advantage:

When we built our office, we had many choices as to where to put it. So, in order to save you money, we put it in the Rapid City area, Pennington County, South Dakota... which has:

1-NO Wheel Tax (unlike other counties...) this saves you an average of $32 to $48 a year!! Those of you who are using another service in South Dakota, ask them if their county has a Wheel Tax. If they do, maybe you should change to one that doesn't. (Think about it... over a 5 year period, you'd pay an average of at least $160. Why pay it if you don't have to? Wouldn't that make it worthwhile to switch over?)
2-NO State Income Tax (This is a no-brainer here folks!)
3-Sales tax on purchase of vehicles is only 3% and that is after deducting your trade in at the dealer!
4-There is NO yearly tax, such as property tax or whatever your current state calls it.
5-NO Safety Inspection
6-NO Smog Inspection
7-an RVer-friendly attitude
8-AND... according to the Insurance Information Institute, (www.iii.org) South Dakota is almost the very least expensive state for vehicle insurance!! It's ranked the 49th least expensive state in the entire country in which to obtain auto insurance. (Just think of all the money you'll save by joining Americas Mailbox Mail Forwarding just on that one fact alone!)

We have been SD residents since 2002, using Alternative Resources as our base. Traditional work ethics are alive and well there.

Unemployment is 3.8% and dropping....

i agree i grew up there and go back twice a year 1week at christmas and 1 week in the summer camping, i have 2 brothers in Rapid City and a sister in the Spearfish area.

Any of you had any health insurance issues yet?? Someone I know had to move his residence to Texas as South Dakota was not real friendly, they cancelled his O care health policy, said he had to live there and prove it for something like 9 months?? Not sure if they told him wrong, or what, but, he is now a full timer with Texas residency and insured once again.

While many States have great tax incentives, low vehicle registration or no income tax requirements, claiming residency is becoming more difficult. After 9/11 and the Patriot Act you must prove you live in that state and meet each States requirements. Smarter individuals than I, routinely attempt to register their RVs in Oregon to avoid sales tax and registration. Those days are mostly gone. States like California, search 24/7 for tax evaders etc. Oregon for example now makes you get an "Oregon license" and prove residency before registering RVs etc. For kicks I found SD requirements for DL. Something you must only have 1, from your residency state. Just FYI...

Guess it depends on your insurer. Medicare/Tricare for Life has not been a problem for us, and have not heard of that problem fron any other SD folks we have run into.

For domicile issues it is important to know the laws and requirements from the location you wish to use as well as those of the location you are leaving. For us, becoming South Dakota residents merely required that we provide proof of staying in the state one night, as well as changing over our vehicle registration. Leaving Ohio, we merely keep records of where we stay. If it ever becomes an issue, we would need to prove that we spent at least six months plus one day out of the state to legally say that we no longer are residents of the state.

As for insurance, that is more of an issue with state and federal laws regulating how insurance can be issued. When we left Ohio our Humana Medicare supplement was cancelled because we were no longer residents. All we had to do is reapply for coverage in South Dakota. The coverage is the same and the rates are the same. It really doesn't make sense to have to go through all of that, but what part of government regulations really do make sense?

Vehicle insurance was the same thing. Have coverage through GS, and when we changed domicile to SD, just had to call them, they cancelled the previous coverage and drew up new plan for us in SD, took maybe 10 minutes on the phone.

I think the plan to not allow DMV to give info to out of state contractors is good.
