My home base is the San Diego area. Last year when we camped in Zion National Park I received my local San Diego channels. This year when we went we got nothing. I called to complain but was informed it was not DirecTV's doing, but rather some inane regulations that changed to be more stringent.
Right now we're on Monte's 1st Big Adventure, heading from Louisville, KY to Cincinnati, OH, and we haven't had any of our local channels in the month we've been on the road. But it really hasn't been a big deal. The overwhelming majority of the campgrounds we've been in have a cable connection, so we use that to get network TV (ABC, CBS, NBC) and switch our TV input from TV for the cable to HDMI where I have the satellite. And if we don't have cable, the batwing antenna serves as a good substitute if we're within range.
We also use our Internet connection to see what's happening back home. Either through the park's WiFi, or through a hotspot we create with our smartphones (as long as we're withing cellular range).
If we have no cable or antenna availability we rely exclusively on the satellite, and then claim we're roughing it!

We use Dish and generally don't have any trouble changing local areas. If we do (happened twice) we just ask for an RV specialist and things become fine again.

Directtv did make some changes in their spot beams across the country, We always got the Orlando locals in Florida as we are in that area. This winter we got the Tampa locals and we are a long way from Tampa. We questioned a directv service tech in the campground and he said they had for what ever reason changed the spot beam and we were now in the Tampa local spot beam. He did not show us where the boundaries were and he did not tell us to pick a Rv resort not far away and use that zip code and address when asking to change our installation address. No he did not. But we did get the Orlando locals.

I had an interesting billing issue with DTV the other day. We have auto billing and our credit card was compromised and shut off by the bank. When we received our new one, I updated my account with DTV and life was good, so I thought. When I reviewed my billing I saw where I was charged a $5 late fee. I called DTV and at first got someone in India or Bangladesh or ??? who wouldn't or couldn't help me get it removed. I asked for a manager and got a very pleasant lady to help me. I also wanted to remove a $10 fee I was being charged for HD service since Dish now doesn't charge for it. Short story - she removed the $5 fee, $10 HD monthly charge, gave me an additional $10 monthly credit for auto billing and gave me a $35 dollar credit. I made sure she knew I had checked into changing to Dish TV and had all my facts with what they charge and their deals. She was very pleasant to deal with and my results satisfied me, so I'm staying with DTV at this time.

we have never had a problem with Directv in the over 11 years we have been with them. We do not ask for a change of installation address for short stays. We have been able in 98% of cases been able to pick up a local channel with the bat wing. We have not had a problem in changing our installation address so we can pick up the local feeds in the 7 years we have been on the road for the winter both Florida and the S.W.
We just had our roof replaced and the roofers took down our dish to install the roof. I called directv Friday afternoon for a reinstallation and did not expect them till Monday. They called today ,Sunday and were here at 3PM this afternoon. The tech installed the dish higher on the roof and installed ever ything new but the dish itself. We do have the directv protection plan. We have a over the air antenna also so were able to get the local channels by switching inputs a one button task.
