Noisy water pump!

We haven't been at this very long and, up til now, we've always used park water and haven't needed our water pump. Now that the park's water faucet has frozen and cracked, however, we've filled our water tank and are using the rv water pump. Every time we open an inside faucet the pump comes on and makes a very loud noise. Is that normal?

Those pumps are not quiet. They are mounted to the floor with rubber feet, but the noise travels thru the water lines and vibrates the floor. They are hard to quiet down

They are noisey. I quited mine down a little by placing some thick foam rubber under the feet and putting some rubber hose between the rigid hose and the pump. Jim

line insulation the foam sleeve kind that youwrap the lines with.do as many lines that you can see .that will quiet the lines. the water pump i placed on a piece of 1/2 inch rubber.that quieted the pump also.

Something I found helped was running water through ALL the hot and cold lines to make sure no air is trapped in the system. Don't forget the washer hookup if it's not being used.
It seemed to reduce some of the hammering sound from the pump.

yes they are noisy compounded by the fact that they are almost right under your feet. Everything is noisy in the restricted space of a camper.

It's something you get used to. After a while we don't even notice it. We boondocked for 21 straight days and except for remembering to turn the pump switch on, we paid no attention to the pump noise.

Just think of it as an alarm to tell you if you have a leak or a faucet is dripping.

The purpose of these "on-demand" water pumps is to pressurize the water tank to be able to force the water to your faucets. It is not unusual for the pump to restart (and can be noisy) as it tries to keep the water pressure up for the water to come out the faucets.

Like most have said, if you are using the pump and you don't hear noise, THEN you worry. You should also be concerned if the pump comes on when you are not using the faucets because this means you might have a plumbing leak and this causes the pressure to drop and the pump comes back on to repressurize.

The hardest thing for me to get used to was after refilling the fresh water tank and turning on the pump, it would start immediately even though no faucets were turned on. But I learned this was because at initial start up the pump may turn on to create the necessary water pressure for water to flow when necessary (I think it's called "priming").

Just like pretty much everything else in the RV, there are other quieter brands and models of water pumps you can acquire and install. With RVers since this is an expected sound for water demand I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Others have suggested some great ideas pertaining to making the pump more quiet. In my SOB, I added an expansion tank which helped. The tank has an expansion bladder inside that helps to absorb the water pressure each time a faucet is turned off. They can be purchased at CW for about $40 and can be installed almost anywhere on your cold water distribution piping.
