Funny how times change
Back in the early eighties we camped out in the boonies with our thirteen daughters. Even though we were only about 30 miles from Topeka and 50 from Kansas City we couldn't get TV at all. There was a pay phone nearby, however, so there was a well worn path to the phone and the girls spent most of a months allowance every time we were there.
Now we're camping at the Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in OK and we have no cell service so no phones and no internet, but the satellite TV has 300 channels. And of course pay phones are long gone.

Must be OK, I'm at Beavers Bend in the Kiamichi Mountains, zero Verizon and only "E" service fron ATT. Memories fo dial up without the noise. Too many trees for satellite, so when the sun goes down its night night time
13 daughters, wow the two of you are master parents!

Scott ... we were below the dam at Acorn loop at Beavers Bend just 2 weeks ago. We had zero phone/internet service as well unless we sat up at the turnout atop the dam. We did finally squeeze out a satellite signal after several tripod moves.
Dick ... I hear you ... in the 60's - 70's I just don't see how we survived not being in constant contact with the outside world ... didn't know any different and it didn't matter then. When Mom had dinner ready, she'd hang a sheet out on the clothes line. We'd see it from the field and drive the tractor up to the house to eat. That signal device never had to be plugged in or recharged ... Ha!

I can't get past having 13 daughters! How do you do that? Put up six 2-person tents, or maybe one huge tent? If that is not a typo Dick and you really took 13 daughters camping....you are my new HERO! I hope you are at the Goshen rally because I want to shake your hand. I only had two daughters, but if you had 13 you should get the National Father Of The Year Award!

I have 2 daughters and can tell you right now if I had 13 daughters I don't think I would have been able to be on this site at this time. God has blessed you and helped you, I am sure of that.

No we had thirteen. Two biological, one adopted and 10 what Kansas called at the time "level 5" foster children. That meant if we didn't take them they were locked up. The were considered too rough for adoption and there was no way they could return home so we had them till they could go out on their own. Had all thirteen at one time ages 18-2 years old. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, they really weren't bad kids (if what happened to them happened to you, you'd be pretty mean too) and the older ones tended to help parent the younger ones. There were some good stories over the years, however.

A large pop-up, and three umbrella tents. Was less than fun in a Kansas thunderstorm, but most of the time it worked out fine.

Thanks, but actually the girls did as much for us as we ever did for them.
