12 inch eternabond?? Who knew?

The patch job they did here involved a 32 inch long piece of Dicor patch which is basically Eternabond. I had to buy a whole roll which is 25 ft long, so now I have 22 feet of it left. It cost 182.00 after tax, and the entire repair job cost only 170.00. So we got by for 353.00 and I have enough eternabond to patch a tornado hit. I did find out that you really need a small 2 inch roller to roll it down and get all the wrinkles out. I went up today to make sure everything was still in place and found that I needed to cover the edges of the patch with self leveling sealant. I watch the Dicor roof repair video this morning and they said that silicone would not stick to the EPDM rubber. They had used silicone on the edges and I grabbed the end of it and took it all off like a large noodle. It is now sealed with self leveling sealer and I touched up the rest of the sealer I found. Hopefully that should hold it till we get to Goshen. It is 602 mi. from here. Even it it doesn't I still have the 22 ft of the sticky stuff. I also bought a tarp to cover all the stuff in the front closet and keep it dry if we do develop a leak. The rubber behind the edge of the cap is still bagged and think stretched from acting like an air dam on the trip down from Omaha. My mileage dropped from 11.7 to 9.6 for that trip. I will know if it gets bad again and I can go up and just cut it all away and toss down some more eternabond.

I think you will find that once it is down and seals it is almost impossible to peel off. I used it on my pickup camper last on a seam that was comming apart on the roof, just to reinforce it I added the white spray 911 instant leak sealer in a spray can. you see that advertised on TV Great Stuff. don't think you will have much to worry about.

I have patched numerous times with eternabond tape and have never had to caulk the edges, found the tape to be self sealing.

I've never caulked the edge either. Never had it release either, thus the name. I think it would last longer than the roof. As I mentioned before, we have had a 4 foot x 4 inch piece on our roof since new in 2010, looks as good as new.

According to the Dicor roof repair video silicone won't stick to the EPDM or the patch material. The self leveling sealer will. Having had all the trouble I have this last week or so with just that I wanted to check out what I should have checked before I ever started any repair. I got a phone call this morning from Dicor tech support and was also told that I did right by covering the edges with the sealer. She gave me a lot of other great tidbits about the rubber roof and repairs. Their recommendation for original install it to leave a minimum of 6 inches and up to 12 inches of excess on the ends and it should all be glued down. Ours had 1.25 inches before the cap was removed.
I was also told that Eternabond is almost the same as the Dicor patch material and both work the same way..

Dave, if you are looking for somewhere to use that eternabond where it will be of value.. and if you have slide toppers, I found a layer of eternabond on the top surface along the edges goes a long, long ways towards preventing rips in the wind. Doesn't seem to affect rolling in our out, either. I've even taken to using small pieces of eternabond on the thin spots you can see light through, also. at least where it's visible. On the less visible areas I use the black gorilla tape (sure wish they made that in white!). Our toppers will be seven years old in August, very elderly for those things. They show a lot of wear via all the patches but they're still hanging in there. I think the eternabond on the edges has really helped.

I also put a layer of eternabond for a few inches along the point where they attach to the rig, to keep them from ripping at that point. Actually, I did that after they started ripping and they've gone another two years without getting any worse.

With a decent cutting rig I could have 66 ft of 4 inch, or 44 ft of 6 inch. or 88 ft of 3 inch... As far as the toppers and awnings are concerned I am going to gradually replace all the toppers with the 16 oz material that was posted on here this spring.
