My pin weight is listed at 2800#’s
I’ve only pulled this Montana 60 miles from where we bought it . It seemed fine. Sounds like we are going to be right at the limit with this trailer though.

Keep in mind 2800 is empty so it will be higher when loaded. General guideline is loaded pin wt will be 20-25% of the trailers GVWR. Best to take it to the scales to know for sure.

Fixed that issue.... went to Missoula and traded for a new F350 Duly.... 14,000 gvw, no worries about pulling the 3155 now.

That's right, most people that tow heavy fifth wheels with SWR trucks are over weight. The payload capacity is the issue along with tires

The SRW 3500 trucks have a payload of around 2700+/- lbs while the duallys are around 5500 lbs. And to make matters even worse, many tow with 2500 trucks, a lot of these are WAY over weight.

The problem is not just with the trailers pin weight. You have to account for everything that is resting on the trucks tires including all the passengers in the truck. 5- 200# people add up fast, not to mention your bed full of fire wood at 750#s. By the time you load the truck there's not much more payload capacity for the trailers pin weight.

.......
Don't know about the 3500s. But my 2012 F350 crew cab long bed FX4 6.7 SRW payload rating is 3,100 lbs. Newer model years are higher, in some cases much higher depending on configuration.

According to the Ford dealer my 2017 F350 SRW shot box had a payload of 2800lbs. The DRW has a 5000lb payload. GRV 11,500 vs 14,000. As I mentioned before, I was shocked at the SRW rating.

Idalogger52 - I am curious what the sticker on your driver's door post states is the maximum load number.

My 2016 F350 Lariat 6.7 SB 4X4 stickers at 3434. Dry PW at 2300 on the 42' 5er is at 3110 with 32 gallon aux fuel tank plus washer and dryer with passengers. Not much on PW but way under on every other number.

The sticker only states GVW. At the dealership we used Fords spec program . Weight of vehicle minus GVW = payload. I rounded my number off in the above post. The SWR’s payload was just over 2500lbs , the DRW’s just under 5000lbs

Ok BB TX, Will use your #s
Don't beat me up on the numbers, just a possible scenario.

3100# payload (your#)
-200# you
-150# wife
-200# kids
-50# dog
-250# stuff in truck bed
=2250# left for pin weight

There are also other things that need to be included in the payload weight such as fuel/DEF/ anything added to the truck such as hitches/push bars/bed covers etc.

So using 20% pin weight being normal for 5ers. You can tow around a 11250# camper. I believe most Montanas are way over that #

beeje - as I mentioned, mine is a 2012 rated at 3,100 (towing a 2007 3075RL at 34') and the new trucks are rated much higher. According to Ford's web site the 2017 F350 SRW 4x4 max payload ranges from 3,580 to 4,290 for a diesel and even higher for a gasser, depending on configuration.

Fords towing charts are so confusing ..... looking at their slide in camper/max cargo weight chart a SRW F350 4X4 has a max cargo weight that varies from 2761kbs to 3923lbs depending on wheelbase, cab configuration and vehicle GVW. (21 different possibilities) these are with 6.7PS , gas engines are all higher capacities

I agree, Fords towing charts are nearly impossible to figure out.

BB TX I looked up your Montana. It is listed as having a dry weight of 10450lbs, cargo weight of 3810lbs meaning fully loaded it could weigh in at 14260lbs. They also list a pin weight at 2260lbs which is more that likely BS since 20% of 14260lbs = 2852lbs.

So by my previous #s of 850lbs+ in the truck and 2852lbs of pin weight you would be around 600lbs over weight.

I am not trying beat anyone up here, just trying to figure all this very confusing info out for myself also.

The vast majority of people that tow anything have NEVER weighed there set up fully loaded ready for travel.

I have done so on many occasions. If fact I just did so a month ago and discovered I over loaded my 2014 DUALLY by 700lbs because I loaded it to the hilt with fire wood for a 2 week trip.

My whole point here is that anyone can state #s all they want but the proof is in the actual recorded weights.

I encourage everyone to get there rig weighed fully loaded. You may be surprised at the findings.

This is true and correct, coming from the Ford truck forums board this has happened to more than one person. If they find rust or dirt in the gas tank which is part of the diagnosis and repair because of the metal shard contamination to the fuel injectors and related parts when the pump grenades they wont cover it. Guess where the rust came from? Fuel transfer tanks made of steel like the ones you get from the farm store or on line.
I had a new 39 gal. one with a gravity fill line to the fill neck. After some months I decided to put a cheap 100 micron filter on the line with a clear bezel after 2 tank fulls thru it clog the filter with rust, big rust particles after some research found they all do it from the moisture in the fuel, air, partially filled tanks. The tank went on craigslist with a warning and was gone in 2 days. Now I use a 30 gal. plastic one and the new filter has not a bit of contamination in it after months of use. 6.7 users beware.

Sorry felt I had to get this out after MLH mention it.
