Heading to Las Cruces NM, rear tire BLEW. Heard the pop, saw debris fly and TST Alarm … believe front tire kicked up something and rear tire ate it. Had been debating changing the 2017 tires. Lessons learned:
1- Make sure jack will jack up trailer (try it)
2- Make sure you have the plan to fix it
3- Impact wrench would not loosen nuts
4- No break over bar, had to use torque wrench
5- Got spare out because bolt and slide were lubed
6- Practice changing a tire

Blessings:
1- Minor body damage
2- Spare had tire monitor and pressure
3- 54 Towing in Tularosa NM was four miles away ( jack wasn’t big enough)
4- From tire failure to drive away was 45 minutes
5- Shady side tire failure, opposite side from traffic
6- Wide shoulder
7- Day time and breeze blowing and temperature below 90

Big-O Tire in Silver City NM (next days stop), got me a set of Sailun tires the next day $960 out the door on four tires.

When we did our original upgrade from the Goodyear Marabombs, the Sailuns weren't available, so went with the Goodyear G614's, which were available if you ordered the rig that year. Not only did I have the four on the ground replaced, but also had the one on the spare rim replaced with a G614. Didn't want to risk a failure of a cheap spare in the remote possible need to have to use the spare if a tire went flat. Finally had the Sailuns installed last year due to wear caused by a bearing failure several years earlier. At bit over $2,000 for the five G614's in 2013, but was well worth it having serious tires on the rig. Glad your damage wasn't more serious than it could have been.

wrench is key

If your impact would not remove the lugs you need to get the Earthquake impact at Harbor freight. Cheap insurance that you will get the tire off. I have a medium duty DEwalt that claims it will do it but it would not if the battery is just a little low even a full charge it would struggle. I had a flat, in a parking lot thankfully, and the Earthquake made quick work of the lug nuts using the truck Hyd. jack and a torque wrench to tighten things up. If you have a flat on the truck at 165Lbs believe me you`ll need it. The Dewalt wouln`t budge them. Works great for the wheel bearing greasing routine to. Manual labor is for the birds at my age.

Welcome to the club! Unfortunately, THIS is a club no one want's to belong to. I certainly feel your anguish, but glad you kept everything under control and were able to get a fix in a timely manner. This is the part of RVing that certainly is no fun!

I would add $960 for four sailuns installed to the blessings list. That's a great price. I paid close to that for the tires alone and had to pay another $35-$40 each to have them mounted and balanced.

What brand of tire blew? And, they were original tires?

I use a large socket and long handle to do lug nuts. But actually haven't done that in 5-8 years or so.

I have carried a long handled 4 way chrome lug wrench in my truck bed for years. Has worked well on the 5er as well as the truck. The extra length and being able to push and pull at the same time makes it pretty easy.

The tires were taken from my 305 when I traded - 2017 date code. Now have a 25"break over bar and 20T jack. I'll get the tire off the ground after breaking lugs loose.

Take a close look at the wheel - not on the ground - IS kept the tire OFF the road saving wheel ... never heard anyone mention that.

I carry this kit, that I purchased at Tractor Supply. It’s a pretty good setup.

My turn today for blow out on original tires

I had a rear driver side tire blow on my 2021 295RL this afternoon, was no fun having tractor trailers running 75 mph 2 foot away. Called Good Sam and they were out in about 1 1/2 hours, only problem was 2 of the lugs had swelled and didnt want to come off. We hammered the socket on and was able to finally remove the remaining lugs.
What would anyone suggest for top of the line tires for my rig? I've heard Good year Sailuns, does Michelin make RV tires?
Appreciate any help that can be provided, Thanks!

Mike

If you are within the weight limits, Michelin work. My axles weigh 5500 and 5800 - so each tire is around 2900 max. My tires are standard LT tires and handle 3040 lb. But expensive. I thought I saw some people getting Sailuns for < $200 each but may be wrong.

As Tom said, the Michelin XPS Ribs are very good tires for a lighter trailer. I ran them for 14 years (one set 9 years/2nd set 5 years when I sold it). Michelin says inspect yearly after 5 yrs and replace at 10 yrs. First set still looked practically new with over 20,000 miles. Second set did look new after 5 years. Never even a low tire on any. But my trailer GVWR was only 14,400 lbs. And being vacationers, not long or full timers, I never loaded it with much “stuff”. So the 3,040 lb load rating worked for me.

You might be able to get away with E-rated tires on your model since it's below 14,000lbs. The GY Endurance seems to be the most recommended tire in that range, followed. Y Carlisle. It's best to get your actual weight then buy tires that can carry your max anticipated load. Michelin Ribs and Sailuns are probably overkill.

If your lug nuts were swollen I would suggest a set of McGuard nuts. They will never swell or rust. A little pricey but you will be able to get them off next time.

The 85's are a larger diameter tire than the 80's and higher weight rating. If you have a high country, you should be fine with the 80's. They are also G rated and should be a bit cheaper and lighter weight. My 3791RD has the 80's on it right now. I'll probably go to the 85's on the next set just for the added height in the rear as I'm still just a bit nose high when hitched.

I noticed the tire that blew had a TPMS sensor mounted on it. Was there any indication on your monitor that the tire was low on air or high temperature?
