Looking for CG near Daytona FL and all points west

We will be heading south to Florida and points west this February for a few months. We would like recommendations for campgrounds around Daytona and then any good recommendations for other campgrounds along the Gulf Coast to around McAllen TX and possibly right to Tucson AZ.

Most of the time we intend to spend at least a week in each campground and explore from there.

We realize that diesel will cost more than a round the world airline ticket but we promised ourselves that we would do this trip once we retired so here we go!

We stayed at International RV Park & Campground
or
International RV Park & Campground
It is a Passport America campground
It is about 2 miles from the Daytona Track and 5 or 6 miles from the beach.
Great park and we would absolutely return again.

I have heard Fort DeSota around Clearwater is wonderful. Have not been there but are heading there this year to check it out. Some sites are right on the water. Look under Pinellas County Parks and Rec. Sites book quick so it is hard to get into and I think they are booking for Feb now.

Ft. DeSoto is a fantastic place. Beautiful beaches. But beware of the low overhanging limbs on the interior roads and campsites. We are familar with the pet section and would be glad to help you if you are interested in a particular site for the pet area.
And Glen is right International RV campground is nice. Right down the street from Daytona Speedway!!.

I live about 35 minutes from Fort Desoto Park and we go there all the time. We are still working full time and we like to go back and forth to work from there and feel like we are on vacation!! It is the most beautiful place to be. You will love it. Until this Spring it was only $25 a night, but they bumped it up to around $37 a night. No sewer hookup, but 2 dumping stations. The beach there has been rated the number 1 beach in America. They have 2 fishing piers, canoe and kayak rentals and everything is clean clean clean. You will love it!! We have stayed in both the pet and non-pet areas and find the non-pet a little nicer. They have just upgraded to 50amp service. Some sites are a little more fun to try and get into than others, but they do have a few pull thrus. It is all worth it for the sunsets. Enjoy...Joanie

Since we are going to Fort Desoto in the March interested in your opinion of why the sites are better in the pet section? Wider, better views, easier to get into?

My personal opinion is that the non-pet area is nicer. There are more water sites and they offer a better view than the water sites in the pet area. The sites go around in a horseshoe and the pull thru sites are in the middle. It is better organized and I think the lanscaping looks neater. If you go to the website you will get a good look at how it is set up and if you click on an individual site you can see a picture of it. I like sites 200 and up. The pull thrus are really roomy and I am just as pleased to be there as on the water. As a matter of fact, my "Casa" is there right now because we have it set up for my niece and her husband to vacation in this week as a wedding gift to them. Let us know when you are going to be there and we will visit and tell you about all the wonderful places to see during your stay....Joanie

Here's a place to start...
Fort De Soto Home Page

Like Joanie said If you do get to Ft De Soto by all means let us know. We know a few other area MOCers that may join in and we can have a Mini-Rally

We would also be interested in meeting at Ft. Desoto in Feb. If so we need reservations NOW! They fill up very fast.
Let us know if others are going and we'll make reservations in the pet section.
We heard somewhere about a "Rally of One" with a rose brush involved. We prefer a gaggle of Montanas.

Just to clarify, I would meet any MOCer staying at most any west central Florida campground but I would not be dragging the Monty along. As we pay for our site in Clearwater I would not want to be paying for another site such a short distance away.

Snowbunny,
Do you have a route preference that you want to take to get to South Texas?

How many miles a day do you like to travel?

I am overwhelmed with the responses! We will be travelling down the east coast to around Daytona/New Smyrna in early Feb. so that we can visit some friends in Deltona. They have no place for us to stay so it would be nice to stay along the coast. I am a water person so I prefer a route that puts me in campgrounds where I can get my toes in the sand without driving hours to get there. So it would be nice to travel along the gulf coast towards Texas and Arizona.

We travelled this route about 30 years ago in our first experience with RVing and that's why we have a Montana now. That trip we stayed at a KOA just west of New Orleans, at a KOA near San Antonio and at a campground in Atlantic Beach Florida. I thing it was called Hanna Park.

We have friends in Tucson Estates that we will be visiting and would like to see the area around Mission Texas where I gather a bunch of MOC members winter. I would like to spend some time around South Padre Island as I believe it is similar to the Outer Banks of North Carolina that we LOVE. (Heading there in three weeks!)

I have been interested in Ft. Desoto for years but heard that only Florida residents could make reservations. Is this true?

Once we leave Tucson in April we'll make a bee-line back to Vermont and will probably only stay a night or so at any place along the road.

Another of our considerations is finding campgrounds with reasonable rates by the week or month for future reference. We are even considering finding a place we can store the Montana for a reasonable price in the far south to save diesel on future trips. That way, we can drive down, hook up and travel for several month each winter. We won't be RVing in the spring/summer/fall for the forseeable future. Besides,we are 600 feet from Lake Chanplain in a beautiful part of the state. We are where people go when they are RVing!

Anyway, I appreciate all the help!

Thanks

Jim

Well there are now 2 confirmed MOC families booked for the first week in March, 2009 at Ft DeSoto park. Dave and I will be in the pet area site 138 on 3/2 3/3 and 3/4. I have an email from cdaniel saying they will be there from the end of Fed to the first week in March as well. Ya'll come on down and join the fun!! Actually I am originally from Connecticut so the "ya'll" is really "all you guys". this will be our first MOC event, even if it is only us and I am looking forward to meeting any and all!!! My husband and I volunteer at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo and would love to get a group together to give you a tour and some behind the scenes stuff. Let me know when you book. Hurry up because the sites are going fast.

Snowbunny, what you heard about only FLA residents getting into Ft. DeSoto is not true. We'll try and get reservations there also in March.

We won't be able to make it this winter. We are going to Thailand to visit my brother and won't be back until the end of January. We can't guarantee our travel plans accurately through March as we have several committments. We probably won't know when we could get to Ft. Desoto until we get to Florida!
