New Addition on the Way

Many of you that have attended the Goshen rallies remember our dog Magnum. Since we lost him two years ago, I have been searching for our next dog. Today I found out that the litter I put a deposit on at the 2008 rally is finally in the hopper. Ultrasound today revealed lots of puppies. We expect them to arrive around June 20th, with us going to Corpus Christi mid-August to pick up the little tyke. So, we should have another addition for our visit to Goshen this year. This will be another Pointing Lab. Could be Black or Yellow, Male or Female. We have pick of the litter. The breeder uses the same tests as they use for service dogs.

Ron,
See if you can pick the one that stays the cute puppy.

Congratulations. They sure do make a difference in our lives.

Wayne -
I dread going through the puppy stage. Our last Lab was such a great adult, it was hard to remember what a terror he was as a puppy. We are embarking on this in the hope that within a couple of years we will have another well behaved dog. In the mean time, lots and lots of training. Especially for a Pointing Lab. It'll be fun though.

Well, after two and a half years of waiting, we brought our new puppy home from Corpus Christi yesterday. Sirius Black made the trip with no crying and no accidents. I forgot how small a baby Labrador Retriever is at eight weeks. At 10 pounds, he is just a little bigger than my foot. We couldn't believe how well the little fellow traveled. He is already looking forward to the MOC rally at Goshen.

I had to laugh when I read how you aren't looking forward to the puppy years. We got our beloved yellow lab when we lived in England. I gave up the first 6 months of my life literally to train her. But, in spite of all she was learning she kept being a little terror at times. Then we went to a local Shire Faire (County Fair) and the Bobbies (policemen) were giving a demonstration of their Bobbie dogs. Over the loud speaker the announcer said the Bobbies will accept German Shepherds at 6 months, but labs not until they are 2. The reason, he said, is that labs just don't mature until 2. Well, to my surprise almost to the day our "Candy" turned 2 she completely settled down. She was the best dog ever. We had her for 13 years and miss her terribly. Lucky you to get a new loveable puppy to love, play and laugh with.

Never heard of a pointing Lab. How are they different from the English or AMerican Labs?

footloose, you are right about the first two years of a Lab, but the adult dog is worth those two years. Slewis, the Pointing Lab is identical to the English and American Labs, except something in certain strains get them to Point instead of flush. For those of us who can only have one dog for waterfowl and upland it provides the whole package. If you go to the American Pointing Lab website you will find a lot of info, along with the test requirements. Another great website is [url]www.Gunclub-labs.com[url]. Julie Knutson has written the only book on Training the Pointing Lab. I was fortunate that my last dog, Magnum, was a Pointing Lab. I started my search to find out whether that tendency was nature or nurture. There is some work being done to find the Pointing gene in these dogs. This new little guy is from one highly successful 4x GMPR and one only starting to get titled. Whether he ends up pointing or not, he sure is cute.
