Do Not Call List -Cell phone

FYI,

Starting January 1 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. As of Jan 1, your cell phone may start ringing off the hook with telemarketers.

According to the National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec. 15 2004 to get on the national "Do not call list" for cell phones"

Call 1-888-382-122 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the "do not call list" to be put on the list. You have to call from the cell phone that you want to put on the "do not call list."

You may also do it online on HYPERLINK http://www.donotcall.gov

Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years.

Had no idea of this until my son gave me a heads up.

Thanks for the info, my wife was just asking about this a couple of days ago. I didn't know it was available. Another benefit of the MOC.

Thanks!
Had no idea they would ever release numbers to public. Guess we may have to go back to landline if we get too many solicitations.

Skip is right. I received an email regarding this same thing. I was a legal secretary for almost 20 years and an attorney I worked for told me that solicitors cannot call cell phones since the person has to pay for incoming calls. I also looked this up on the Urban Legends website and it's true that some of the wireless companies are compiling a "directory" of cell phone numbers but unless you specifically request that your number be listed, it won't.

I usually check the Urban Legend site but did not do so this time. Still I think it is a good idea to register. Just hope "The List" doesn't fall into the wrong hands!

I registered my cell phone number with the Do Not Call List when I registered my land line in 2003. That better be good enough.

I gotta tell ya. I'd rather work on a honey wagon than be a telemarketer.

Dennis, my understanding from the Urban Legends site is there is nothing to register to avoid being on a list. The list is to be 'opt in', where you register if you want to be in the directory. So, in this case, doing nothing keeps you off the list. So don't register unless you want your number in the directory.

BlackLab, thanks for the post. It's generating some good discussion.

Send a message via Skype™ to padredw
Was on the national news last evening. The only problem is the large number of calls/messages to the Do Not Call center. Registering your cell phone number is unnecessary, but has NO adverse effect. The above messages are mostly correct, except in this regard --IF IF the news reports were completely accurate.

BlackLab - thanks for the update on the do not call list. I had taken care of the home land lines months ago, but like you just hear about the new national cell phone directory that is being developed. I hope they honor this list and not call.

Thanks again!
