Not A Good Start To Our Trip South

With my seasonal position over it was time to head south, spending the Holidays with our family in California then on to Arizona. After sitting in Washington for 6 months it was a slow process getting on the road yesterday, had to remember how to do it but we made it. Great trip until we were 20 miles from our first nights stop at Wildhorse Casino in Pendleton, Oregon.

As we were looking forward to a relaxing night I saw sparks and shredded rubber coming from under the Monty. Yes, we lost a tire as well as the fender skirt. Luckily the spare was aired up and in good shape. After a call for road service and a 45 minute wait we were on our way again. We decided to spend an extra day here, get a new tire, if the rim is still good, and continue on down HWY 395 tomorrow.

glad you were not hurt, maybe all the bad luck is gone now and the Casino trip will be lucky!

I just had that exact same damage repaired from a Chinese road bomb blowing on us.

That is the one unexpected (or is it expected) thing that we can do nothing about until it happens. We are also glad to hear there were no other damages and that you are safe.

Happy trails for the rest of your trip.

Glad to hear you are OK. Sounds like you took it all in stride and moved on. BTW, what was the brand of tire that blew?

You have empathy from us. Been there and it ain't fun to see your Monty with damage. Happened four times to the 2003 Big Sky we had. We ended up with about $5,000 worth of body work. Newer models with the different fenders to get knocked off seem to be easier and cheaper to repair. Here's hoping the remainder of your trip is smoother sailing.

Glad everything worked out for you. I have a comment then a couple of questions . I was told by a "tire guy" that RV tires have always had a problem with blow outs because they tend to sit for extended periods causing damage to the cord. I am not a tire expert and have been reading all the threads on this issue (hundreds). He also stated that in his opinion 4 years was about all one should expect from an RV tire for the reason stated above regardless of the miles. My unit has 6k miles on the tires and I will get rid of the Marathons this spring before we travel. This decision is based on all the threads about Marathons. Now for the questions;
What brand did you have, how many miles and finally, how long have the tires been idle (total months). Thanks for your input.

Glad the damage was not any worse, although any damage is bad. Christmas is almost here, you should ask Santa for a TPMS. We had two Marathon tires in eight days give up on our last trip and our TPMS warned us before we had any damage. TPMS's are well worth the money, one of the best things we have bought for the Monty.

We are safely on our way south but it was more of a story than just replacing the blow out. We replaced the tire and left Pendleton, Oregon on Sat. morning we made a rest stop on our way to John Day and I noticed the other tire on the side of the blow out had a bad bald spot on the inside of the tire about 1/3 the way around the tire (looked like tire tread separation).
We got another tire in John Day a and all had been well since.

The Prologue to this is that after sitting in Washington for six months both of these tires were a little low on air. I aired them up and checked the others that were fine. As was mentioned it seems that the tire broke down and I had two tires now separating. These tires were almost 3 years old with about 10,000 miles on them. I checked the tires before leaving Washington and they all looked good but they did not last long. We had the tire guys at Les Schwab check out the tires before leaving Pendleton, OR and they all looked good, the bad spot on the other tire must have been on the bottom.

It could have been worse but it seems luck was on our side and all went well considering the situation.

Jim,
Glad it wasn't any worse than it was. The Marathons on ours are coming off tomorrow and being replaced with 4 new Maxxis tires. Looking forward to seeing you and Carolyn in Quartzsite again this year.

Happy to hear it wasn't worse. I think tire failures are just too common in trailers evn when every precaution is taken by the operator. If these were trucks or cars the regulators would be all over the issue.

Just a note of caution. Many posts talk about one tire going and then another on the same side a little while later. This should not be a surprise as the second tire had to carry well over its designed load after the first one failed. The longer it took to discover the first failure and to stop, the greater potential of damage to the second tire. A good tire tech may be able to do a visual check for signs such as belt separation, sidewall deformation etc. Others here in the forum have much greater knowledge of tires than I do and they may be able to more expert opinion than me.

Jim, I'm sorry to hear about the blowout and the problem with the other tire. But I'm sure glad to hear the damage was not worse, although what you got is bad enough. We've also been there. Far too many blowouts and other tire problems with those Chinese tires. We had the Marathons on a Jayco Eagle and our first two Montanas and had tons of problems with them. Then lots of problems with the Missions and Freestars on this Montana. We now are running American-made tires and so far, at about 5,000 miles, they're looking really good. Fingers crossed.

I hope your tire problems are behind you now.

We had a similar incident last year. Our tires were 4 yrs old and started just leaking air and then delaminating. We were replacing them one by one, but when the last one went it caused $1800 in damage to our unit. I will do as others suggested and automatically replace all the tires every 4 yrs dispite the milage or remaining tread life. Glad your situation wasn't worse. Happy travels!

Sorry to hear about your minor (major at the time) disaster. It seems to happen to a lot of us who have trailers and 5'rs. Ours occurred 6 weeks ago. Luck be with us, a motorist (our Angel at the time) stopped us on the road and said the tire was going bad. It had a large bubble on the inside of the passenger front tire. Later at Lazy Days we found the tire behind it was coming apart also. The man in charge at Lazy Days in Tampa said "From his many years of experience, it is usually the passenger front tire that goes bad first on a set of tires". His thoughts are, this is the curb side, next to the edge of the road, so it therefore hits the most of the broken edge of the road and the potholes. This makes sense.

Our tires had less than 8000 miles and 1 1/2 years on the unit. I must have hit some really bad holes in the road (that I don't recall) or these tires are not up to par for the job they have to do. Have a Good Day

Our Missions lasted @10K miles and @ 2 years. There was nothing wrong with them but we did not want to tempt fate so we changed to Copper tires. The Coopers were doing well till our shackle bolts came looose and ruined the coopers. We now have Generals which are I believe American made and at @ 5K are looking good.
