This might be true for full timers or with your particular ins co...not mine. My RV is listed with my other vehicles on the auto policy, with no charges to the RV for liability, the TV covers that. What I pay for on the RV, on the auto policy, are comprehensive and collision coverage. My house policy has nothing to do with RV ins...ins guy said house ins and RV ins are not related at all.

Cat320, No offense but If I read your post correctly I would be looking for a different insurance company or at least a different "ins guy".

PRIOR again PRIOR to our going full time my homeowners insurance fully covered my RV. Slip and fall while inside or trip over the 30AMP cord outside I was covered.
As far as damage done to the RV while parked and not hooked to the truck was covered by my homeowners. Any damage to the RV while hooked up to the truck was than covered by my truck insurance.

AFTER repeat AFTER we went full time and sold our house we no longer had the homeowners insurance and so we went to an insurance company that specializes in full timer's RV insurance.

Sorry but I doubt your "ins guy" knows what he's taking about if he said "My house policy has nothing to do with RV ins...ins guy said house ins and RV ins are not related at all." In all probability you are paying extra for something that is already covered. That was what our original insurance agent tried to pull on us. This is very typical of ins guys that do not deal with RV insurance on a regular basis.

Some, absolutely , cover an rv if it is not "self powered" while sitting at home, at the campground and has the same coverage as your auto does. Some, Not all, do not have this added insurance to home owners. Each one is different. Check yours.

Self powered is the key to most home owners coverage. A moho damaged by hail at home is NOT coveraged by home owners, a TRAILER sitting in your driveway at home damaged by hail is, if your policy allows it.

I think what some are missing is that each state has different guide lines. I didn't realize that states covered RV under the homeowners until Rich told me about his policy. The state of Texas does not cover your comprehensive and collision coverage under our homeowners policy Your auto liability does extend to your RV while towing it. If I have a wreck towing my RV I have to have additional coverage for comprehensive and collision for my Monty.

FulltimeFollies states it perfectly.... the key here is if your policy allows it. Some states might let you cover your RV under your homeowners, Texas doesn't. People are surprised when they have their business tools stolen out of their garage and the company won't pay for it. It clearly reads that if they are used in business they aren't covered. Lots of good information is found in your policy.

The policy declarations that state your coverage amount are just as important as all of the typed endorsements and language in the jacket. It is very important that you read all of it and if you don't understand some of it call your agent or the company and find out what it means.

Since we aren't full timing yet I will worry about that type of coverage at a later date if it is needed. I have to retire first to worry about that.

I think this is a great eye opener for everyone that each and ever state does not write the same type of insurance. That means that we all need to do our homework to be sure that we are covered properly.

FulltimeFollies and Driftwoodgal are both correct on how various states insure our rigs and that is just one more reason to deal with an insurance company that knows what they are doing and that in my opinion is an insurance company that built it's reputation as an RV insurance specialist.

When Lorraine and I first decided to get into full timing we began to look at insurance and naturally we talked to the local insurance establishment and it just seemed none knew what they were talking about. We than got on the Internet and the many RV forums, such as the MOC, and proceeded to ask questions and it was folks just like we have here that finally got us moving in the right direction. As a matter of fact our own sriegle was one of those that gave me some very worthwhile information about RV insurance.

When we had a stick home in Kansas our homeowners and auto policies covered the RV in the same manner that Glenn described. Our agent was also a former neighbor and friend, so I was comfortable we got the correct skinny from him.

Foremost has been great for us. We have had a few claims and no problems. The last claim was a little odd. On our last 5W we had a travel pod. One day discovered that it was gone! Of course, the stuff in it was there becuse we really didn't need most of it. Lot of hunting gear and Foremost was apologetic because it had to base the value as used clothes that were fairly old (but serviceable and expensive--all you hunters know what I mean). They did the best they could. Had the original reciept for the pod-it was ten yrs old at the time and they gave us the replacement cost for it which had gone up $100 since purchase.

Steve, who did you go with?
I called my State Farm agent yesterday about our policy. He gave me, "I will look into your questions and get back to you". Made me a little nervous. He did call back and Sue talked to him, I was out. I may call around for some comps.
He did make a point about our Umbrella, we have a 3 Million Umbrella policy, mainly because of our HVAC business, that would be a problem, with an RV policy held by another company.

Lots of times the insurance compnay that carries your umbrella policy will want to make sure the Best ratings on the company or companies that carry your other insurance such as car, rv are high enough. Years ago we had trouble getting our umbrella because our car insurance company didn't have an A best rating. When we changed carriers there wasn't a problem.

Be sure to ask the agent where he is getting the information from when he answers your questions. Sometimes even the underwriters at the companies won't have all of the answers. Unfortunately you can buy a policy and when it comes time to use it not have the coverage that you thought you had.

Ozz, I went with National Interstate through an agent in Sioux Falls, SD. South Dakota has one of the cheapest insurance rates in the country so I'm not sure how it would be for you here. The truck is with Progressive/Drive. NI was cheaper for the RV and Progressive for the truck. Both companies handle RV insurance as do some others.

We're new here and love this site. As for advice on insurance, here's what we have to share.
After spending hours surfing and on the phone, I initially went with Progressive for 5th wheel ONLY insurance. Not many companies will insure just the 5er alone. THEN after 30 days, I found Explorer RV insurance for 45% Less. VERY reasonable with low deductible AND personal possessions coverage as well. Check em out and save yourself a LOT of time and money..Glad to help.

Dimarktravelsusa, If you have a 3400RL, You have 3 handles to pull to empty the three tanks. Two are found in the front basement compartment, as you have stated. The third, galley tank dump handle is found on the same side of your Montana, on the frame just above the area between your two tires (that would be the driver's side of your rig).

I talked to many of the insurance companies listed above, but when the smoke settled, my spreadsheet/database narrowed it down to one. Are you a Texas resident, because that might be the discrepency? I live in Washington and will use it as my resident state, and comparing apples-to-apples Explorer RV was considerably higher for me than Miller...I am not sure if the state of residency makes a difference or not, I never checked that part out....and I thought I had spent enough time to cover all the bases, dumb me.

I hate insurance companies!!

Rich, I drove by the dealer today. They're closed. But there's a brand new one sitting just inside the fence in their driveway. Ours came off the line last Friday so that likely is it. Our dealer has his own decent PDI and then we'll do ours. We should take delivery by the end of this week. Thanks for asking.
