When I went through my apprenticeship, I had to take geometry, algebra, trigonometry, plane trigonometry, solid trigonometry and compound angles. Then in college, I took three levels of algebra (I stopped at calculus). Now that I'm retired, if I can't figure something out with a calculator or a yo-yo (tape measure), I just guesstimate it!

I just swapped my Marathons for 614s on my 2013 3402RL

I am very happy with the Goodyear store in Columbus, OH. The list price of the tires was $385. All I had to do was mention that I have heard others getting the G614s for about $320 and they matched the price. Then I asked about trading in the Marathons and the fact that I was running with very little safety margin. The salesperson said he would have to check with Goodyear. He made a couple of calls and Goodyear authorized him to bring the price down to $295/tire! PLUS we get to keep the Marathons to sell on our own!

$1350 for a set of 4 out the door (including almost $100 in tax though :-( ) - I did the remove/install

Anyone want to buy my Marathons? Good shape, only about 5k miles...

Would you believe that even with G614s I was overweight on one tire. Two reasons added to this event. One we had the IS suspension installed (8,000 lb suspension) and it came with the cost of added weight. The second reason is we travel with 1/3 fresh water and our tank is in the front. So with the additional weight we went to 17.5 rims and G114 tires. Now we are in pretty good shape.

Wow - that's surprising George, given the ratings of the G614's. Glad you got it fixed though. Can I have your old tires?

Weighing, tire for tire, can be a real problem. A lot of truck stop scales can weigh axle for axle but not tire for tire.
I have found that on Sundays/holidays some Provincial and State truck scales are closed but leave the scale readout active. Some are out of commission or blocked completely so unavailable.

I have used them to do each axle and then each tire. Actually I do each axle and then back up and run one side down the platform noting the wheel weights. Then the opposite tire can be calculated.

I'm carefull not to abuse this or even those will be closed but keep an eye out..

Thank you. This is really good information. I really want to weigh my truck, truck and camper, but I don't know where and how. I know there are scales at my local truck stop. Do I just go in and tell them I want to weigh the combo then unhitch the camper and get a second weighing. How do you determine weight left side vs right side and front axle vs back axle on the camper tandems. Or am I just going overboard?

I would talk to the people who run the scale first and see what they recommend. Another option would be to check out some camping rallies and see if they have anyone attending who will do weighing, like was done at the last Montana fall rally. They have individual scales and measure each wheel separately, then re-weight the tow vehicle without the trailer attached. To see where they will be, go to their website: http://www.rvsafety.com/

Peter, Most truck stops with CAT scales will only be able to give you the total axle weight, not the left/right or front/rear axle on the trailer. But, it will give you a idea of where you are at.

If you have a trailer with 7K axles, and your loaded axle weights are 11K you are "probably" OK going to LT tires. If you are pushing 12K on the axles, a G rated tire is something to consider.

My '14 3150RL loaded for winter, (heavy) is about 11,300 on the axles total. I went with Bridgestone Duravis R250 tires. A LT tire, rated 3042lbs @ 80psi @ 101 mph. Replacing the OEM Marathon's @ 37lbs with a all steel tire weighing 59lbs.

I now have about 10K miles on the tires. I installed them 5/13 and have yet to add or adjust the tire pressure. Cold is 76-80psi and will rise to 93-96psi.

They work for my weights.
