Furnace or not

09 3075rl here and I'm wondering if it's OK to turn on the furnace while the slides are closed. The registers are unobstructed.

Not saying it is OK, but we have done it with every rig we have. In colder temperatures, since the pets are crated in the rig, we like to keep them at a comfortable temperature, regardless of the outside conditions. Just relating what we do, not recommending the practice for others since it can cause a "heated" debate at times. Hee Hee, I am quite proud of myself for that pun!!

Just remember to turn off the furnace when refueling or getting ready to enter a tunnel. Having devices spark to try and light themselves can be bad in these areas. This is the main reason one is not supposed to travel with propane tanks open, but it's the spark from devices using propance that are the concern.

After reading about this a couple months ago in other posts we have decided to head south with our furnace set on 50-52 in order to avoid winterizing. But it probably is good advise to shut it down when getting fuel.

The only objection that the Atwood people had to doing that when we asked at the Rally was if some of your vents were fully to partially blocked. If they're all open they didn't have anything against it.

If you leave Mich in Oct for FL and don't return til the end of April you don't have to run the furnace while traveling... just saying...

2Xs what Dick said...

Believe me when I say that I have been thinking that same thing every day for the past week! Already working on the DW to leave earlier next year.

We never winterize . We set temp at 45 and if freeze warning comes , we turn the heat on, slides in or out. Never had any problem.

We first learned about keeping the furnace on (set at 50) when traveling the Winter we went to the factory in December and then back South. A tech at an RV dealership told us about doing that. I'm not saying it's "OK," but after starting to do so, I sure noticed that prior to it I had been towing one big block of ice.

Our vents are not obstructed when the slides are closed and we've run the furnace not only traveling but when we closed the slides during nasty winds.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with doing.

Cheers,
Betty
