Since you live in Maine, you might consider checking out South Dakota. If you are coming south for the winter, consider the Escapees Club in Livingston, TX. They have an interesting website that answers a lot of questions about transfer of domicile to Texas. Tennesee is another state without state income tax. Happy RVing.

Hi Welcome Were just up the road. Stop and visit. We are running on dealer plates at the present time. Only do 9 months now but will most likely do S.D. when we stop working in the summer and give up the plates. Dan

South Dakota is one of the cheapest states to license your coach. There are some other states that don't have state income tax. Need to do some research which state you want to have your domicile in. Keep us posted. Happyrving....

Another thing not immediately obvious is South Dakota has the third lowest insurance rates in the USA. I don't know who the lower two are. No state income tax. No property tax on vehicles. No property tax on vehicles. They do have a 3% excise tax on trade difference amount when you trade.
Florida was not mentioned but is another frequently used by fulltimers. We used South Dakota.

You will probably have to pay a 3% tax for registration of a new vehicle, unless you registered it first in some other State. Then, the SD tax will be the differential between what you paid and the tax paid in the previous State. Since most States, if they do charge a sales tax, charge more than 3%, you probably won't owe any sales tax to SD in that case.
Two more BIG advantages of SD residency...no initial or annual vehicle inspections, and all auto and trailer registrations (initial and annual)can be done by mail. You will, however, have to swing through SD in person to swap out your Maine driver's licenses for SD ones. Driver's license renewal is every 5 years, and it has to be in person (with a couple of exceptions which don't apply to most folks)
Best Regards,

Hi Patodonn. Just wanted to mention when we first registered in SD with pre-existing truck and Montana, we paid zero tax to SD. They didn't even ask. But when we traded trucks, we then paid the 3% excise tax on the trade difference, as mentioned. But no sales tax.
We just traded trucks the other day and I just now took a gander again at the paperwork. We bought in Kansas. The Kansas dealer did not charge us sales tax at all. He told me that's because we're from out of state legally. When I get the title and mail in the paperwork to register the new one in SD, I will have to pay the 3% on the trade difference plus the title and registration fees. No property tax or sales tax.
