5th Airborne
Is it worth installing a 5th Airborne and what are the advantages. CW has them on for $850 approx. including taxes.

I like mine. My whole towing experience changed over what is was before - however I'm not sure where the credit should go. We went from a 2003 2955RL to a 2007 3400RL with Mor-Ryde suspension and a 5th Airborne. I would like to think the 5th Airborne made all the difference, but it could be the suspension and length of trailer as well.

I just put one on before my last trip to Colorado, 1500 miles roundtrip. I didn't have a lot of chucking to start with except on some concrete highways where is would jerk some. Now I have almost no chucking. And what little is left is softened to the point of being hardly noticeable.
In addition, I can see in my rear view mirror where the truck bed moves up and down over bumps and the Monty moves very little. That shows that the hitch is taking a lot of the shock away from the 5er.
Very happy with mine and I think it is worth the price. Ordered it from tweetys.com for $683, free shipping.
It is heavy, but I installed it myself. A helper would be great, but I did it alone. Propped it on some wood blocks in the bed of the truck. After I removed the old pin box, I raised the front of the 5er, I backed the truck up until the new pin box aligned with the existing bracket, then lowered the 5er down on the new pin box until the holes lined up (with the help of a stout screwdriver).

I had one on my 2003 Big Sky. I thought it was great. In my opinion it was better that the current Trailair pinbox I have now. If it were me, I would shop that price. It seems a bit high. Try this site:

You need to know which Lippert # you have.

We have one and it made an immediate, very noticible improvement. 5th Airborne is going to be at the 2008 MOC Fall Rally and so is Moryde. That would be a great time to see them both.

Like the others said,Airborne makes a great differance. I had one installed after our first pull. I noticed the bed of the TV moving much more that the Fiver. I would not pull without one from now on.randye

I feel that most of the aftermarket pin boxes are all pretty much the same and none will remove all the chucking. We have the MorRyde and pretty much swear by it. Prior to the MorRyde we had the standard factory pin box. There is a world of difference between those two.
IMHO, I would not narrow my search done to one manufacturer over another. I would do some very thorough researching of all aftermarket hitches before settling on anyone in particular.

We have the 5th Abn...any air pin box will work, I'd shop around and get the one that gives you the best deal. IMHO, $850 is a bit high...even for CW.

CW price is $749 plus $71.10 installation plus taxes. I checked several places around the northwest and CW has the cheapest price.

We have a 5th and it makes for a very smooth tow. Initially, we experienced chucking, generally at slower speeds and in slow moving traffic. We have found that disengaging the jake brake and tow/haul feature eliminates most of the chucking.

We've had a 5th Airborne for almost 2 years that we purchased at CW for ~$750. We are very pleased with the performance and would recommend it to anyone looking for a smoother ride.

Got the 5th Airborne Sidewinder (with air bag and shock) on our 2955RL. Really like it. And can do full 90 degree turn or back up with the short bet and don't have to think about it.

Thanks everyone I ordered one from Tweety's for $683.33 and free shipping. Will install it myself in Sept. I haven't told my helpers how much it weighs yet but they know there is no refreshments until it is in place.

Maybe a little input to help you figure this one out, Brad. We went from a 2003 3295RK to a 2007 3400RL similar to yours, with the MorRyde. We didn't change hitch (until recently) or pinbox. I could tell the trailer itself rode better, based on movement of contents, but I couldn't tell any difference in ride in the cab of the truck.
