Duramax problem

I recently have been having problem with my 03 duramax losing prime to the engine. It starts and then dies. I go to the prime pump and reprime it and it starts right up. Has anybody had this problem and if so what was the cause and what was the fix.

First thing I would check would be the fuel filter.

Hi Had the same problem for almost a year. When I parked with the nose up even just a small amount it needed to be pumped. The problem was a small crack in the filter housing that the dealer replaced. The crack could not be seen but the dealer was aware of the problem from previous customer complaints. Changing filters did no good whatsoever. Dan

My Son in Law has my old '03 Chevy/Duramax. It started doing something very similar about a year ago. It would start, run about 15 seconds then quit. The sensor for 'water in fuel' was not tight in the filter can, and the bleed plug also broke, so it may have had a crack in it also. A new filter and bleed plug fixed it, and the problem has not returned.

I would suspect the bleeder plug o-ring. Seems with the new ultra low diesel the o-ring is failing quite frequently. Scary to think how many other o-rings might eventually be effected. I have seen talk of going to a viton o-ring on the bleeder. My son has been having the intermittent engine stalls also and traced it to the bleeder. You might try to continue pumping the primer, and watching for leakage with the bleeder closed.

Had the exact same thing happen to my '02 about a year ago. Dealer changed the fuel filter, still happened. Then the dealer trouble shot the whole fuel system and found a small leak, I believe it was in one of the fuel lines. Apparently, any leak in the system will cause it to lose prime. Good luck.

The whole purpose of prime is to get air out of the line. The leak could be anywhere, in a line, around the filter, in the filter, etc.

I am no mechanic, so where is the bleeder valve.

Small screw on the engine side of the fuel filter housing. Careful though as it is plastic. IIRC (truck is not here at this moment) it is straight slot and hex. When priming, just loosen up until air comes out. The oring is on that screw.

As a continuation of the above...keep pumping until you get a steady flow of fuel (no air bubbles) then all the air is out of it and it is primed.

Hi everybody;

Just wanted to let everyone know I have solved the problem.

I pumped up the filter and noticed fuel dripping from the bottom.
I went back to where I had the filter changed and they said they had had some problems with that filter, they changed it free and it seems to have solved the problem.

I had this problem occur last August while camping out in Idaho a long way from anywhere. It turned out to be a problem with the fuel injectors. Chevy replaced all the injectors at no cost (would have been about $3000). The dealer said Chevy was replacing up to 200K miles at no cost. I had about 120K miles at the time. There was some sort of manufacturer problem.
