Mileage
Well, I just finished a solo rv run from WA to the SF Bay area and back and averaged 18.9 mpg for the trip. I thought that was pretty good for my truck.

The last time I checked for a long run without the camper I was getting 17+. I just turned 60K miles and will have the 60K service next week. Will see if the fuel mileage increased with mileage like it has in the past. I have a couple hundred mile run on the interstate in a couple weeks and we will see how we are doing.

That is EXCEPTIONAL!!! My F350 rarely gets over 12 with a tail wind and lots of downhill runs! I am happy with anything over 10. I only get 17-18 MPG without the Monty.

Into the head winds yesterday I got 8.1. Typically get 10-11 when towing. Best around town is on the freeway after a fill up of 16 mpg. Don't know what it would be on a sustained freeway run without towing. At $3.19 to $3.29 a gal I wish it were better.

That's pretty good, Mike. The Ford 6.0 is supposed to do better on mpg than the 7.3 but I never saw it that way with my two. This Dodge, on the other hand, blows my 6.0 away in mpg.
This past summer I'd make weekly round trips to see my Mom in her nursing home. 270 miles roundtrip. Most of the trip was at 70 mph on cruise on an interstate with rolling hills and with stops for toll booths (4 stops) and rest areas (2 stops). Plus some town on each end and about 60 of the 270 miles on hilly 2-lane 65 mph road. I generally averaged a bit over 19 on those trips. Sometimes better, sometimes less, depending on winds. Once I reset the computer when sitting at 70mph on cruise on mostly flat road for 10 miles. I got 23.2 for the ten miles. Unfortunately, speeding and slowing down brings that number down.

I could get 18-19 mpg going straight up with my 7.3 (3.73 gear ratio), as long as I kept the speed under 70 mph. As soon as I left the mountain 2 lane roads and pushed it up to 80 or so on the interstate, it would drop down into 12 mpg average in a hurry.
My 6.0 performs nearly the same with the same gear ratio, maybe about a 1 mpg less or so with the new fuel.

I have not pulled the 3400 since my shinny new 08 Ford had the cracked DPF replaced and it runs like a different truck. We ran down to Pompono Beach, Fla from here, 500 miles round trip on the Fla tpk and I-95. Did as high as 18.6 on a long run and averaged 15.6 in varied driving for the trip. We are at 5300 miles.

I have 65K on my truck. I am having trouble justifying the 60K checkup. Looking at the list I was provided it does not seem to be more than actually changing the fuel filter and an oil change. I am going to review my owners manual and see what should be done and go from there. I may have to learn how to do some of this stuff...which is not my strength.

I have questions about it also. Was told going to service the rear & transfer case, tranmission, fuel filter & change oil. Expect this to run over $500. Oil change with filter at dealer runs around $100.
I do know that when they service/change fluid in transmission it shifts like when new, slips when shifting now like at 30K miles.

Mike, be very, very careful if you change the fuel filters on the 6.0. There are two. They're not that difficult to change but you absolutely must be sure they are correctly seated and must follow the procedure for priming them. If you don't get the air out you risk wiping out the fuel pump. In 2004, a new fuel pump, installed by the Ford dealer, was over $700. Because mine was having the stalling problem, I convinced them it must have been a faulty pump and they covered it under the extended warranty with $100 deductible. I had no problems the prior times I changed them but after this I never again changed those filters myself.
How do I know the pump died because of my filter change? After changing the filters and thinking I properly primed them, I got about a block before it up and died and wouldn't restart. ERS to the rescue.

I have the 7.3 diesel but probably the same fuel filter problem. Hmmmm. $500 for a 60K checkup. R & R on fuel pump by dealer $700. Economically a no brainer....so I will have to think on this.
