awning &wind

Good morning all, just was camping over the weekend with the new 5ver & had some wind around 15 to maybe 20 & had to put the awning in, I like to sit out & enjoy the weather, but not in the hot sun. My question is what is everyone doing for lite wind & the awning?

My husband is terrified of wind damaging the awning and even a light wind pulling at the fabric where it attaches to the trailer. As a result, we rarely use the awning, and then only when there is no wind. We never leave it out while we are away from the trailer.

So this is probably the extreme end of caution. I'll be interested in seeing other people's views on this.

Same here. A little shade is not worth a damaged or destroyed awning.

All the Electric Awning Mfrs will tell you not to, but if you use common sense you can tie down an electric awning. Have been doing it on all three fivers we've had.
I extend the awning all the way, install my tie downs so they are just snug, then I retract the awning to put a little extra tension on it.
Now, if heavy weather or winds are expected I pull them in.

When the wind comes up, we can hear the awning flapping and retract it. Also don't leave it out when away from the rig. No problems so far.

I'm in Kansas where wind is an everyday norm. We've found just sitting under the front overhang works in a pinch to get out of the sun. I'm not a fan of the awning tie downs ... granted they do work in mild wind conditions, but if the wind does pick up ... it takes some doing to retract the awning at that point.

I have a 575.00 bill in my wallet to remind me to roll the awning up in the wind. ;-)
Incidentally, I now carry a pkg of 16" long heavy zip ties, because when the fabric is torn there's nothing to keep the awning frame retracted. It's a sonofagun to get it folded back up and strapped to get home.

A lot depends on wind direction to the trailer. If the wind is directly into the rv side where awning is mounted, you won't be able to keep awning out. But other directions allow it to be out in more and more wind. Just a call on how comfortable you feel.

We have one campground locally where I use the tie downs. We setup on a big grassy area where I use the corkscrew anchors and adjusters to tie down the awning and leave it tied down for the 5 days we are there. Most other places we go the ground is too hard to use the corkscrew anchors, or we are on pavement.
