Non-commercial class a drivers license NC
Appears that my Montana and Ram dually combination require a special drivers license. Have spoken with NCDMV headquarters and four local offices. No one seems to know anything about this. Their website is no help, and gives no indication of what to study nor what to expect during the driving test. If you have this license, please give me some information...and, if anywhere near Raleigh, where did you go for the test. Thanks so much!

If you have spoken to your DMV and 4 local offices why do you think you need them special license? Up here in Va we don’t. We don’t seem to have any more problems driving than California does.

If that license is required it is required. Just because some state employees don't know their job is not going to be an excuse for when you do need it. Keep going up the chain.

I just flipped through the NC CDL Handbook.
Study sections 2, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13 and that should be enough for the non-commercial Class A. It's listed briefly in the regular Handbook on page 10 (11/102), but doesn't cover the sections in the CDL book.
Here's a link to Nevada's non-commercial A/B. It's basically the same information, but none of the CDL stuff.
The DPS has separate license classes list here.

The handbook is pretty clear you need a class A non commercial, but gives no clue to what you need to do to get it. Similar to Texas, but the wording for the Texas class A non CDL is for a weight or combined weight over 26,000 lbs and I am just under that. But in Texas you do have to take a written test and a driving test towing the trailer.

Now that you have wakened a sleeping dog, they will see that extra money can be made by requiring a special license!!!

Interesting that 7 states force you into a commercial license, CDL.

[QUOTE=mazboy;1198404]what are you talking about? North Carolina has no special requirement on RVs.
Exactly what I tried to tell him in post No 2. Just like Va.

Length has nothing to do with it.

Is that because you haven't been pulled over? Or been in a wreck and the other guys lawyer bring up an improper license?

30 years.. Got in touch with our dmv about 5 years ago about the license.. They said they dont test anymore..she said you dont need one..As far as accidents, that’s
why we have insurance.

I'm moving in next door to Carson City. I've looked into the licensing issue and found we do need the license. I wouldn't trust an ignorant state employee at DMV to know the law. Having the proper license doesn't make us better drivers but it does make us legal.

You do and I took the Non-Comm Class A in the Fall of 2018 at the Carson City DMV. The inspection and skills testing was done on the asphalt pad south of the building. The road test was up I-580 into Washoe Valley to the Bellevue Exit and headed back.

If it is based on weight, what is your gross trailer and truck weight?

The license requirements are based on weight RATNGS, not on scaled actual weights. In those states that require it, if the gross combined weight rating of the truck and trailer exceed 26,001 lbs then the class A non commercial license is required even if the scaled weight is less.
Now, how many people are towing with GCWR numbers higher than 26,001 lbs and should have the class A license but don’t? Probably a pretty high percentage. Most people probably never even know of the requirement. I didn’t for years until reading it on an RV forum and checking the Texas DOT web site. But my GCWR is just under 26,000 lbs and class A is not required.
