Water filtration

Has anyone installed a water filtration system inside their Montana? I'm thinking of 2 canisters behind the basement wall near the water pump and the third canister under the sink with a separate drinking faucet. What brand did you use? Any advice or pics would be great.

We have a filter that mounts outside on the frame. Homemade setup. Watch where you bury the canisters since you will need to change filters on occasion. We only filter for particulates and drinking water is from bottles.

Installed a three canister system adjacent to the convenience center (.5 micron/ carbon/ metal trap). At the kitchen sink installed a Acuva UV purifier for potable.

I agree with PNW Fireguy. That's a good idea

I put this together. The DuPont or similar filter is a sediment and taste filter and the Pentex or similar is for any other nasties, I use quick disconnects, and mount it outside of the RV on a 1/2" rebar post driven into the ground, The blue hose hooks to the water hookup in the convenience center via the disconnect. Been using it for 4-5 years with only a yearly filter change. I prefer the exterior mount as our HC really doesn't have excess storage. I have essentially the same system in the house though do have a separate potable water filter on the kitchen sink for taste. Our water usually comes from the Hudson River and while perfectly safe, tastes lousy from whatever treatment chemicals used

A couple things to remember with filters. The more filtration the less pressure and or volume of water flow. Another, since trailers are mobile we are hooking up to different locations all the time and water quality varies by location. Unless you know what is in the water you don't really know what to filter out.

I've always thought that as well.
For example, one spot we stay at in AZ has a lot of salt in the water. We do not have an RO system, but that is likely the only thing that would work. The salt levels are not really high, but the water tastes bad. So we use 5 gallon bottled water for drinking and cooking and basic filtering for the rest.

My question is - in spite of the differences in water that we need to filter, is not a basic sediment filter then a carbon filter "good enough"? Or maybe others change up their filtration depending on where they are?

Thanks,
Brad

I guess I just think differently about those scenarios. I carry multiple filter types and adjust accordingly to the scenario. You can get water table reports on Google. Inlet and outlet gauges take care of knowing when it’s time to change your filters and with a purification system after the filters I comfortable that biologics have been removed. I guess if that’s not enough then running a whole house RO system would be another option but you only get about 1/3 of usable output for every 2/3 water input. Wouldn’t work for as much off grid as we do.

We've installed a whole house water filter attached to our bottle water softener. I used a clear filter bowl so I can see the filter element inside the the bowl as it gets filled and I can change it when needed. I have the whole set up sitting in a plastic tub next to the convenient center inside the basement. Reason being, if you leave a clear bowl out in the sun it will develop moss or mold when it does not if the sun does not reach it.

Hi,

We have similar setup as PNW Fireguy also with considering for occasional boon docking.
We are weekend worriers and occasionally 2-3 weeks. So we take out our filters when not in use to get them dried and not develop mold etc.
Change every year.

For water filtering between source and camper we use the simple camco evo filter.
This water goes to the house (e.g. shower, bath, etc) and freshwater tank. Having only one filter there was never a pressure issue.

Under the kitchen sink we have a 2 filter system from Aquacera and after that the Acuva UV system.

I am pretty OK drinking after the water comes out through the Acuva finally.

Here are the parts:
Camco Evo

Aquacera 2 filter system
https://www.amazon.com/Aquacera-Nilu...143971&sr=8-15

Acuva UV ( we have a previous gen. model)

A sediment and carbon filter is a good general purpose combination. I wouldn't rely on it if having pure drinking water is a concern. It certainly helps for showers and easier on the plumbing system in general.

Learned something new...thanks Rondo. Now I know why the RVWaterFilterStore sells a tinted filter canister.

Possibly why I never found any mold in my arrangement photo'd above even though it has sat in the direct sun for weeks on occasion.

Ours are mounted inside our basement, but always wondered why the “clear” canister was tinted. I sanitize our water system annually to make sure we address any contamination.

We talk about water filtration and how some folks do that job. Some folks go way beyond anything I would but that's their prerogative and what they feel is needed for their well being.

Within the hour I replaced all three of the filters in the house. The sink drinking water filter with a Pentek that is supposed to remove virtually 96+% of every known nasty, the main with a GE sediment and taste pre filter and a Filtrete with a final "what ever's left" filter. I also have a couple spare DuPont whole house filters. Great, you say, but is it? Every one of those four US based name brands were made in -- China.

You may say these filters are made to "exacting" US home office standards. But are they really. All we need to do is look at the quality of some of their facilities like a lab in Wuhan and a, ahem, minor world wide health situation that isn't going away.

Oh well, just one of my ruminations on a cold, snowy day
