Sewer Hose length question

Taking delivery of a 2021 3855BR in April and I gave away my old Rhinoflex hose with the sale of my old RV. I want to buy a new one and have it ready for the new rig but I don't know what size to get. In its compacted state, what size hose will fit in the Montana sewer hose storage compartment? 15' or 20' or two 15's???

OK, I had to go out to my camper and measure the length of mine, and took a couple photos. I then went out on the internet and found some photos of your camper to see if the location and the size of yours was (about) the same as mine, and it is.

Mine is 47 inches long from the outside of the cap to the other end outside of the cap.

I don't know how that translates to the compressed Rino sewer hoses though. Knowing it's 47 inches long, you can always take a tap measure with you into the store and measure them, even in their package.

I have found that carrier to be way too short for hose set-up.

Far too many times, we've been in campsites where the sewer hook up was not right beside the back of the trailer, neatly positioned right in the middle. Many places we've been to, I've had to run the hose completely behind the camper, or several feet away in other directions. Also, we have 2 sewer outlets on our camper. I need a lot of hose.

First, here's photos of the current sewer hose holder on my Montana:

47 inches long:

Personally, I never use that container for my sewer hoses. It's too small. But it is a great place for storing my long metal hardware items, like fire pokers, hotdog sticks, and other long skinny metal items. Actually, in my last travel trailer, I never carried hoses in the bumper either. I always used it for storing my longer metal items.

Here's how I carry my hoses, and that box goes in the back of the pick-up truck.

Why carry so much? Here's why:

My previous Outback Travel Trailer:

Chances are, one hose will not be enough, no matter where you camp at. No doubt, your camper will have 2 outlets also. One will be for the Kitchen sink (galley), and the second outlet will have 2 valves feeding into one outlet for shower and toilet.

Consider finding an alternative storage for sewer hoses.

To be better equipped, you should have at least enough hose that is equal to the length of your camper. (that is if you travel and are transient). If your camper is 41 feet long, you should have at least 41 feet of hose. You NEVER know where the campground sewer connection will be located. And if you are parked a couple feet forward, or a couple feet backward, you may not have enough to reach at all, even if the hook up is dead center along the campsite pad. Now, If you are permanent parked or seasonal, you only need the distance from our outlet to the campground connection.

On my 2019 331rl, the Rhino hose will not fit in the tube. The connectors are larger than the tube opening

^^^ ditto these. I carry 3 10' hoses and various connectors and adapters. I also use a larger plastic bin to keep in all in. You never know what arrangement you'll find at the various parks. On one occasion, 30' was just barely enough.

Use a Dremel to grind away a bit off the "ears" on the connector and the hose then fits nicely in the tube.

I think we have about 50 ft of hose, and at times use most of it, and this is from a single sewer outlet. I know we are using 40 ft of hose when on Becky's Dad's property on the mountain in North Fork, CA. I remember using quite a bit of hose back at the Rally in Goshen. A foot too short makes having another 10 foot hose worth it.

Most of you are talking about sewer lines at the back of the trailer. I have been to a couple of places like that, but I think maybe 80-90% are on the side pretty near the middle of the trailer. Someone at a campground said there was some new rule requiring them to be in the rear, but don't know if he was just giving his excuse whey his was that way.
I carry 3 10 or 15 ft. hoses, but as mentioned I use one 15 ft hose 90% of the time.

I bought a replacement waste hose holder for the driver's side of the rig that expands to a much longer length. I run a 15' and carry two separate 10' sections if the need arises.

I bought a longer but adjustable Valterra hose tube that will hold 2 sections of hose and put it where the original OEM tiny tube was attached. I took the OEM storage tube and put it on the other side and it holds 1 section of hose. I have a couple more sections in a plastic container box.

I have both 10 and 15 foot sections. Only the 10' section fits in the original hose carrier that came on the rig and still be able to put the cap back on. I have the Rhino Extreme 20' kit that has 2-10' sections with connectors. The hose connectors do not fit in the tube either, so I just carry one in the tube and seldom use it. The rest of my hoses are in a plastic tote.

I haven't used that hose carrier on our 5er but just a large green tub from Walmart. I have at least 50 feet of hose when we travel as one CG in Maine, depending on where on a very long site we park, can use a bunch of that length. That tub also holds a bunch of extra fittings as well as a spare Valterra knife valve plus a separate black tank flusher hose. The hoses vary in individual length but a 5 footer often is all that's needed with a 10 or 15 foot length.

Then there are the drinking water hose lengths but that's for another thread

If you have a single sewer outlet. Get enough to go from the sewer outlet to 15' past the back bumper. That will cover you for about 80-90% of the places you will camp. Amazon Prime will help you cover the other 10-20%

As posted elsewhere a long time ago, some people use a plastic fence post from lowes or Home Depot. It is 8 ft long and I fashioned brackets and bolted to the frame under the rig. I can easily get 2 10 ft hoses into it - including the connectors on the ends.

Our 2020 Montana 3780RL has one Valterra A04-0151XBK 46 inch waste hose carrier that can store one 10 ft compacted Valterra D04-0200 Dominator Sewer Hose. I would have liked a second one carry a second hose 10 ft hose and might install one.

We probably have 50 feet of sewer hose in varying lengths. We carry it in two big ole white laundry baskets.

I do not use the very inconvenient hose storage on the MHC. A flat, rolling tote carries all my sewer "stuff". I carry a 20', 10' and 15' length of hose and multiple kinds of fittings. Park, roll the tote out as far as needed, remove what's required then close it back. SO much nicer than the old "try to put it in the factory storage 'thing'" without adequate storage space or accessibility.

I have the same camper. In the storage it will only handle 20’. I have not been in a camp ground that I needed more than that. However, I am going to put an extra storage tube under the belly just in case I would ever need it. My 3855br is a 2020, and I put 25,000 miles on it last year, roughly 20 different camp sites and didn’t have any issues with a 20’er.
Enjoy your 5er, we love ours.
