Spare tire

I recently bought an 06 25rl. It has the arctic package, hence full belly pans. Where does everyone keep the spare tire??!

The spare tire for the 2006 in the screen shot below was under the rear portion of the RV - same as my 2018 model spare tire.

Your 2006 2955RL spare should be on a cable hoist under the rig, behind the tires. You should have a lug wrench like tool (but a lot longer) hanging on the front pass through wall on the drivers side. That tool is used to lower the cable and tire. There should be TWO of these long wrenches on that forward wall. One is to lower/raise the spare tire and the other is to manually operate the front landing gear if (when) the system fails.

So I have no wrench and nothing but belly pans underneath. Can I add a spare tire carrier underneath? If so where can I find one?

I believe Trekwood or a local dealer can order a spare tire carrier for you. I suspect Lippert is the potential supplier but it may be made by someone else. You can even try Amazon to see what they have.

Here is one on Amazon.

I seem to remember someone on this forum removed the OEM winch and installed (welded?) a Ford spare tire winch.

Ours failed while putting the spare up.
I took it apart to see if I could repair it. The PLASTIC block that lifts the cable stripped out the threads that rides the worm screw.
Not repairable.

I bought the one Carl mentioned above.

BAL 28218 Hide-A-Spare Tire Storage - I-Beam Underslung Mount https://a.co/d/30pPLF9

It was easy to install I used the same holes as the old one.

However...

After installing the tire on the carrier I lifted it and tried to slide it into place (like a trombone). The middle bowed under the weight of the tire. It would not slide in.
I had to lift it up then set it on my lap, then use my knees to lift up the middle under the tire before I could get the bars to straighten enough it to slide into place and lock it in.

I threw away the old one. I wish now I had saved it to see how much it would cost a machine shop to make a new block out of brass or aluminum. That would make the old one last forever.

Getting trailer ready for trip to Colorado. I noticed the spare was hanging 1" lower. Tightened up and will check daily.

My under rig tire hoist broke the first time I used it. Cable snapped.
I ended up buying a spare tire carrier that slides into the hitch on the rear of the rig for now. I bought one that folds down to allow access to the rear door of our unit since we have the sliding tray.

Years back there were several reports of the cable extending during travel. Seems someone even had the tire contact the ground and did some damage to the underside of the rig. I followed the advice of many and used a ratchet strap as a safety. I did have to crawl under the rig to remove the strap the few occasions I needed the spare but never worried about under carriage damage from a dangling spare.

The cable hoist on my '06 329RL disintegrated and dropped the spare somewhere on I-84. I replaced it with a bumper mount, which destroyed itself the first time I hit a dip in the road. Replaced it with a much taller bumper mount that keeps the bottom of the tire above the bumper, which worked fine. Also allows you to add a tire cover that suits your style.

The OEM spare tire winch is junk. I replaced mine with one from a Ford pick up. I also use a safety strap.
