HI GLOSS GEL COAT

A quick question relative to the Hi Gloss Gel coat option. Our Dealer in Phx told me that they can not order a Montana for delivery in AZ without the Hi Gloss Gel coat option. Anyone else run into this issue in other states? Sounds to me like an attempt to get more money for their trailer.

In my opinion, the Gel Coat will hold up better AZ environment. I have had Gel Coat on both my rigs and would not order one without it. I am sure you will get opposing opinions.

Alan & Kathy, Mine is an '06 (as you can see in my signature) with the Gel coat and I get many folks asking me if it is a new trailer. I think it is easy to keep clean also. I use a wash and wax product on it and it really shines. I just wish the compartment doors had the same finish, maybe on the new ones they are. I do use Protectall on it twice a year also. Having lived in Tucson for five years (pre RV days) I can see the need for it there..Don't think you could go wrong with it.

Me thinks your dealer is telling a story. We do not have the high gloss gel coat but it is a good option.. When we purchased ours there was some question as to what that option weighed (600lbs) that proved to be false but at the time we did not know that.If we were to purchase now we would probably get that option.IMO it is way over priced. The front cap and rear cap are not high gloss gel, The compartment doors are not high gloss gell and the bottom panels are not high gloss gel. It is a stiff price to pay for what is High Gloss gel. However it is pretty.

I think I would validate that with another Dealer. I find it hard to believe.

Not getting the hi-gloss option on my coach is the one thing I regret not ordering. My next coach will have the hi-gloss.

Alan -
You may want to contact Keystone direct, either by phone or the website. There are many reasons to get the Gel Coat, but it is your trailer. If you don't feel you need it, you should be able to get it the way you want. I am not sure if they have a region specific requirement, but there are other ways around it. Keystone will be able to answer your question directly. Or, tell the dealer you're talking to that you found a dealer in Elkhart, Indiana that will sell you one without. They'll get the message.

I could be wrong but I think gel coat is standard now on new Montanas. At least I heard that from somewhere.

Gel Coat is standard on Big Sky's but not the regular Montana. And, you still can't order the basement doors in Gel Coat.

I wouldn't believe that dealer, either. There is, or was, a standard order form. I don't recall that form saying anything about required in AZ.

Of our three Montanas, the last two have had the high gloss option. I think this is purely a personal decision based on preferences and pocketbook. However, my preference is in favor of it, even if my pocketbook is not, for the reasons others stated. It always looks nice, requires less elbow grease to clean it. I'm not sure but I suspect it might not yellow as much as filon will over time and exposure to sunlight. Again, I don't know that for sure but looking at older rigs I suspect that's true.

This is good reading about Filon and high gloss http://www.cranecomposites.com/RV/index.asp

Actally all the finishes are gloss. It is a matter of how many coats of Gloss... You can buy High Gloss finish and put it on yourself.. Might be worth looking into fo the compartment doors.

ALAN,
Within the past 6 weeks I toured a new Montana 3150RL at RV World in Yuma AZ and this unit did not have Gloss Gel Coat.
So along the lines that sreigle states I would not believe that saleman or the dealer.
I have two order forms in front of me right now, one from AZ and one from CO and they both are identical.
Gloss Gel Coat is an option for the Montana. JB

Our first Montana (2007 3475) did not have the gel coat finish. Our new one (2009 3400) does. It was offered as an option. We could tell the difference immediately. It is easier to clean and the graphics looks brighter. Worth the extra $$ in our opinion.

Are you dealing directly with the owner of the dealership or a salesman? When we purchased our 3400RL we dealt directly with the owner. She told us that she doesn't order any with the High Gloss Gel Coat (HGGC) option for her lot...but that you can order one without, but that it was worth the cost for maintenance and appearance. We ordered ours with HGGC. We like it, easy to maintain.

When we were ready to purchase our Montana last July, we had decided not to get the gel coat option due to the cost, but the dealer we ended up purchasing the unit from always ordered their units with the coating. They explained the ease of cleaning and durability made the extra cost a worthwhile investment (plus they charged us wholesale). I'm extremely happy with the finish and when the time comes to order another unit it will have the gel coat.

I'm just not sure why anyone would order without the HGGC. Adds to the beauty of the home and makes upkeep a snap!!!! We are happy with ours....

We did not get the HGGC and wish we had, as for the extra cost, well we have ours hand waxed about 2x/yr and I think the cost of this would have made up for it. Will definitely get it on our next model

I should comment I'm not very good about hand waxing our rig. It's just more work than I care to do in the heat or cold or when I can find something I'd rather do. So, as a substitute, when I wash the rig I use a wash that applies a thin coat of wax as part of the washing solution. It doesn't last as long as a good hand coat does but it looks just as good (to me, anyhow) and next time I was the rig it gets a new coat. When we traded our 2003 for this 2007 the dealer, after paperwork signing and the new rig delivered, commented when I delivered the trade at how good care we'd taken of the rig and how shiny it was. Hand waxing is better, but when I consider the labor involved, I'm satisfied with my method, even if it is a poor substitute for the real thing.
