Ouch!!!!!! My Dodge

I guess I have to learn the hard way. I was making a tight u-turn and turned too short and creased the corner of my cab. I have a 2007 Dodge 3500 4wd single rear axle guad cab. I have a slider hitch, however, I did not stop and slide it back prior to making the turn. Thought I could make the turn with the new front design, but I was wrong. I regret not buying a long bed, but I have to figure out a way to not have this happen again. I am posting this message to show what can happen and to alert others with short bed trucks.

Ray

"Ouch," is such a big word; I feel your pain!
Was there any damage to the Monty?

Ray, you might want to explore the auto sliding hitch, Superglide, by Pullright (I believe is the name). A lot of guys on here have it and say it is the best thing since sliced bread for the short bed trucks. I had a short bed Chevy with a manual sliding hitch, but never had to use it. I have since upgraded to a long bed truck without a slider.

Sorry for the crunch!!!!!

Since this is Memorial Day, I have one comment...if money will fix it, it's not a problem.

Ray, and that is why, as much as I don't like the look and the parking issues, I bought a long bed.

Sorry for your pain.

Ray,
You are not alone in your mistake. I watched a Montana pull out of a CG and popped the rear window on his short bed. He also did not get out and do whatever was needed to get the slider to work.

Hmmm! Wonder why they make those sliders!

This used to be one of my biggest worries, second only to low bridges, but my Pullrite ended that worry. It is an expensive way to find peace but just this weekend I was in a situation where I had to make a very sharp turn and the hitch worked like it was designed. Now I just have to worry about the bridges. I have a short bed Dodge.

Ray that just sucks. I am sorry about your dent. All are safe though and that is the main thing.

Ouch, Ray, what a nasty thing to happen to such a nice truck! I also have a small amount of damage in mine but I got lucky. It's just a barely noticeable if you look hard dimple. I've only used the slider four times in 13 years but I should have used it five times.

My solution? I decided if I got complacent enough to let this happen once, it will likely happen again. So, I went with the pullrite superglide. It's really nice not to worry about it any more.

Ray, the superglide is pricey. But those prices are negotiable. If you have a dealer who will install it for you and knows HOW to properly install it, then consider purchasing online. There are some really good deals that way. If you want to buy from the dealer who will install it, as I did, start talking with dealers and negotiating. I did that and ended up with the hitch, the super rails (required for your Dodge), the superglide cover, a can of the slip plate lube, labor for installation, labor for removal of my old hitch, and tax and got all that for $750 below the retail price for all those things. Email me if you want to discuss further. And tell Colleen hi for us. And tell her that's a nice sweatshirt but it'd be beter if it said Kansas Jayhawks!

chevylvr.... you aren't the first, and you won't be the last...

I did the same thing a few years ago but ended up shattering the rear window. Replaced the window with a new one that has a sliding window-in-the-window which hubby always wanted. So there was a bright side for us.

Have an '06 Dodge swb and have only used the slider twice ever (not sure I needed it then) and have made some pretty sharp turns, but I'll be watching closer!

Sorry to hear of your problem Ray. When I make my U-Turn in the yard to park the Monty I don't even watch the PULL RITE SUPERGLIDE do its job anymore. Expensive but great piece of mind.

I'm sorry Ray but I had to laugh because my brother in law did the same thing. We bought our trucks about the same time but I bought a long bed, trading in my short bed, and the dealer convinced him that the short bed would work. He bought his about a week before I bought mine and while I was at the dealership signing the paperwork, he came charging in because he blew out his rear window.

He had a slider but had never towed a 5ver before and swore that the RV dealer had never shown him how to work the hitch.

A shortbed truck is fine if you either have an automatic slider, or you have a manual slider and actually use it when you should.

I've towed fifthwheels with shortbed trucks since 1995 and only used the manual slider four times. But, I should have used it a fifth time. And that's the problem. It is easy after awhile to get just a bit overconfident about what you can do. I knew my angle was tight but ok. I just forgot about the little curb I'd just backed the Montana over and now ONE truck wheel was coming up. Just one wheel because of the angle. Ray, I was far luckier than you in that my damage is barely noticeable... because my lovely wife saw what was happening and screamed, waved, and jumped up and down for me to stop. And, of course, I always listen to her.

I feel your pain. I have a similar dent in my Dodge (about half the size). Just didn't think I was that close.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. I hope someone will learn from my mistake in judgement.I know I have. I am looking into a superglide hitch, if I can find one for the right price.

Sorry for your accident. I must add the first time I saw a fifth wheel on a short bed truck I knew some dealer said everything while be fine. So and so does it all the time. I bought a long bed and never hit ever....
