** Is This a Problem? **

The water had a bad odor and I flushed the water heater out the other day, boy did I find a lot of crud. The anode rod was completely deteriorated. I found what I thought to be normal deposit material in small chucks but what I'm concerned about is tiny flakes of particles which were blue on one side and brown on the other. It feels somewhat like glass. I called the dealership where I purchased this unit (2002 3295rl) and talked with the service department. I was told that it might even be a type of plastic which could have been there all along since it was new. I replaced the anode rod and everything about the heater seems to be working ok both electric and gas. I don’t want to create a problem if there isn’t any but I was concerned that something could have happened with the liner on the inside. The service dept didn’t seem to think there was any way to really check it. They suggested that it might be able to be checked if it was taken out. They also indicated that it should be ok to continue using it. They suggested using an in-line filter on the supply line to filter anything from getting in.

I figure I will continue to use it and re-flush it later on and see what I get out of it then. Of course if it starts leaking or any other problems developed it would have to be addressed; anyone have anything like this happen?

Any suggestions?

I bet you don't have a problem - when you flush later, there'll probably still be some really interesting "stuff" in there. When you flush again, you may want to sanitize your entire water system with a little bleach. Here's how:

Silvertwinky, make sure you drain the hot water tank OFTEN! When water is left in it for a long period of time it will stink and turn black. I empty my water tank every time I come home or when on a long trip, maybe every 3/4 weeks. I carry tools and teflon tape for the threads of the anode rod. My anode rod will be 4 years old in August and looks like it has a couple more years left!
We used the coach over the weekend and I drained it today for this Fridays trip to Branson.

I also doubt you have any problem. Not sure what could be blue but it might be something you picked up in the water supply somewhere. The tank is aluminum, it does not have a lining. As others have suggested, frequent flushing is a good practice.

Hmmm, That depends...if you have an Atwood then its all aluminum and does not use an Anode rod. On the other hand if you have a Suburban, which most Montana's do, then its porcelin lined and I bet its what your describing. Its blue and on the bonded to tank side will likely have a brownish color to it.
I would recommend pulling the Anode rode, look into it with a bright pen light at night, another localized method is to stick your finger into the same hole and try carefully wiping the side of the tank to see if you pick up debris...be carefull as your correct porcelin is like glass.

I would call manufacture and talk to them. Sounds like the lining.

Up-Date

I returned to the dealer where I purchased this unit and had them check out my suspicions. They agreed that the hot water heater liner was in fact gone or bad. They also agreed to replace the heater since it was within the 30 day period of the purchase.
