Where would you go?

Where would you go and why? Since I'm a newbie I figured I'd draw from all the experience that exist on this forum. There's alot to see & do out there (most of which I'm unaware of) but knowing what you know now, where is it, that you can't wait to get back to?

We spent a month last fall in the New England states. We were slightly early for the fall color changes but still got a lot of good pictures. With the history and things to do, we found that a month was just not long enough and need to go back.

It all depends on how comfortable you are traveling. What I mean is if your new to the TV & RV you may want to make some small trips. Once you reach your comfort level expand it again and keep doing this, in this way you will be able to go anywhere in this great country of ours.

I love the mountains thus anywhere this type of terrain is I'm thrilled, throw in some waterfalls and it can't get any better.

The Great Smokies are the number 1 rated of all the National Parks, (they have the most visitors every year).

Alaska is beautiful. Grand Canyon etc.

We also like to use the State and National Parks there are so many. We believe our money spent there can have a positive impact instead of profits for the private campgrounds.

We have stayed at some private campgrounds. They do have there place I just prefer to use the State and National Park system.
Just my 2 cents,
Chuck

Montana, Idaho, Northern AZ. But we've done that so we will eventually be heading east but will probably spend some summers in the above mentioned areas. Ed hasn't seen the Ozarks yet and he hasn't been to the Baseball Hall of Fame so we have to go there. I want to return to Gettysburg because I didn't get to see it all.
Happy trails.............................

It really would not matter for me. As long as I was "on the go" with my Montana in tow, life would be good! I love the mid west; the Dakota's, Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma would be a few "must stop in" states for me. Oh yes, don't forget about Kentucky and Tennessee.

I would suggest a few "proving runs" within 150-200 miles or so miles of where you live. Sort of a controlled RV "learning curve" to find out what sort of things you and your family enjoy most. That is "do-able" on a weekend, esp a 3 day one.

The long vacation destinations are so varied...all depends on your interests! In general, we go anywhere we haven't been. I've traveled all my adult life and haven't
even come close to "everywhere" in this beautiful Nation.

Out West, we have enjoyed Zion and Bryce Canyons, and the Grand Canyon, of course, but you have to pick your time there so as to minimize the tourist crush.

The BIG adventure, at least going and returning, would be Alaska. I lived there as a teen and loved it. Been back a few times since then; it is still magnificent.

Enjoy the Adventure!

Last Summer I worked in the Jemez Mountains north of Albuquerque NM, I never new such a beautiful place existed in NM. We are hoping to return to the area soon. This summer I am hoping to get a position in Washington or Montana. That will allow us to travel the Northwest. We like the mountain and wooded areas. I spent a good part of my life in the deserts of Calif, Arz, and Nev. Now I want to see the North.

Carolyn has never been to the New England area, I lived in Maine for a few years. We are hoping to visit there this coming fall. I love the area when the foliage changes color.

Right now we are taking short trips around our area to get use to the Montana.

Anywhere you go there is always something new to see. Remember, when you leave your own area to visit some new adventurous area, the people from that area are leaving it to visit your area.

I will follow up on the above reply by Jretz to second his nomination of the mountains of Northern New Mexico and add the mountains of Colorado. We go several times a year and will do so again soon.

However, there are so many variables such as which season [we go to Colorado/New Mexico only in the Summer], how much time you have, how far you want to travel. etc. We made a great trip Summer before last in which we visited Colorado and then on to Yellowstone, Zion, North Rim of Grand Canyon, and Mesa Verda all within two weeks. I know we could have spent much more time, but this was a most enjoyable experience for us.

I note you are in Virginia so I will nominate the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. In North Carolina the area from Asheville west up to the Smokey Mountains National Park, and, on the other side of the Park, the area around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. You could make a nice trip to these area in less than a week [of course, it would be better to stay longer].

We just made that kind of a trip to "The Valley" as we Texans call it. [Rio Grande}. You say, "But you are already in Texas." Right, 600 miles north of McAllen/Mission. [actually 650 miles on the route we followed.] {I can't resist saying that we have an equal distance in Texas between us and the New Mexico/Colorado mountains!)

I edit to add our pleasure in visiting the beaches of Northwestern Florida (Pensacola down to Panama City). The time to go there is late Spring. We already have our reservations for the first part of May at St. Andrews State Park near Panama City.

We hope you enjoy your RV jouneys as much as we have and as we continue to do.

Hey, we're from right up the road - Stafford! Last August we went to Gettysburg for 10 days and that wasn't nearly enough time. We plan to go back after we start fulltiming this summer and spend a considerable amount of time. Have you been to Pocahontas State Park, just south of Richmond? Great place to get away from it all and they opened a large new section 2 years ago. We spent several weeks traveling around Appomattox, Natural Bridge, and over to Edinburg VA to visit some of the wineries. There's a tiny campground in Edinburg (Creekside) that we really enjoyed. PM if you want or need any more info. Enjoy!

Hey CanDo: Went to Gettysburg last September for a golf tournament. 40 degrees, 30 MPH wind and rain. Didn't get a chance to see anything. When I wasn't playing, was inside trying to get dry and warm. Have not been to Pocahontas. Picked up Monty from Goshen in October and spent a couple weeks in Tenn. and 3 weeks in the mountains on the other side of Staunton before winterizing. As soon as I dig out from beneath these tax returns, the anti freeze gets dumped and I'm gone. Good to know there's at least one other from the commonwealth on here. Are you going to Kutztown rally?

It's really hard to beat Glacier...those mountains just keep calling me.
I'll need a new truck to handle those mountains though - I won't even bother trying it with this one...

Hey neighbor, we live in Manakin-Sabot (just west of short pump).

When we started we have found that First Landing State Park in Virgina Beach is a really nice park, traffic is a bear on the weekend need to make reservations ahead because it is so popular. Another favorite is Sherando Lake off I 64, exit 94, beautiful, quite good hiking, also very popular, must arrive at least on a Thursday to get a spot.

Another interesting park in the Breaks Interstate Park on the Virgina, Kentucky border, long drive but nice park. Call ahead to make sure your rig will fit, when we were there we were driving a class C. The host a blue grass festival around Labor day.

This year we will be headed out for 7 months, our first long trip.

Happy Camping

We're newbies so haven't had a chance to go to most of these yet but some of the locations on our list are: Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone Park, Glacier Park, Estes Park (heck, all the national parks eventually!), Key West, North Carolina outer banks, Niagra Falls, Padre Island, California to visit relatives, North Carolina to visit relatives, Minnisota to visit friends, Myrtle Beach SC, Daytona Beach, Monterey CA, all state parks here in Missouri and many state parks in adjoining states of Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennesee, Kentucky and Illinois .......... and all points in between!

This summer we are heading to Redmond Oregon for The Rally put on by Good Sam. After which we will be taking 2 months touring Washington, Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin before arriving in Indiana and the MOC Rally

If you really want to be undecided as where to travel in these great United States just vist "My Beautiful America". (This link was pirated from a previous post by indy runner.) After watching this video you will be totally baffled as to where to start your journey.

Dave, you are correct. There is so much to see, so much to experience. I could not begin to tell you what we liked best. If you'd like some ideas, please click the Our Travels link at the bottom of this post and look around. On the 21st of this month we complete four years of fulltiming and have hardly scratched the surface.

Initially you'll likely be in vacation mode. Go, go, go, and see as much as you can in as short a time as possible. Hopefully you'll eventually realize how tiring that is and will slow down, spend more time in one place, see things most people don't even know exists, and start to really experience the area. It's awesome. Good luck. Have fun.
