Finally Pulled the Trigger

Well, after much debate and research, we finally pulled the trigger on a new TV. We are now the proud owners of a 2013 F350 SRW Diesel King Ranch. This should make pulling the Monty much more comfortable. Unfortunately, the Monty is already put away for the winter so I won't get to try it out until next spring.

Our 2012 F250 has no problem with our 06 Monty. We did change our 26 gallon diesel for an internal 50 gallon tank and then got the Ford dealer to update the truck software for the 50 gallon option that is already in the software. We really like the range with 50 gallon and the bed does not have a fuel tank in it! Also put on Jimmy Jammers on the tail gate--makes it so that crooks cannot remove the tail gate--and added screws to the tail lights that require a special screw driver to remove the lights. Why do this--if you search the MOC site you will find a fellow MOCer who had his tailgate stolen along with the tail lights--the truck was in his driveway at home when it happened.
Next issue will be DEF--don't get it at the Ford dealer--they have it--usually about $20/gal. Auto parts stores are about $12 for 2.5 gallons, truck stops are about $3.70 per gallon. While towing I estimate to burn about 1 gallon of DEF for every 700 miles--no towing about 1 gallon every 1000 miles. But best of all--it is still a great truck!

The big three are finally getting up to speed on their power and weight GVWR. I jus upgraded to a 2013 GMC 3500 Duramax from a 2002 GMC 2500 Duramax and the 2013 6.6 turbo has 100 more HP and 200 more ft lbs of torque. Huge difference in pulling and ride. HUGE.

Jaybird, I have a question for you, it may be considered a new topic but I am asking here. How does that 450 do in the mountains as far as controlling your descent on a mountain and is it factory or have you added a retarder on the engine to help with that? My old 7.3 that I just sold to my son did a good job in the Midwest while I would pull the tractor down hills at maintaining speed but just wondering about the new engine. Appreciate any info you can give me and thanks.

We pull a 3400RL with a 2011 F-350 SWR ex. cab Super Duty and haven't found a hill that would slow us down yet. I can't wait to get it in the Rockies!! That 6.7 Liter is one sweet puller.

You may have to look in the mirrors to convince yourself that you are still pulling it! I agree with Hickory and others, the 6.7 pulls great. I just had a quick day trip (not towing) to another state and back in windy conditions. I got 18.3 mpg (29,000 miles on truck). That is one sweet looking ride!

Thanks to everyone for the flowers. We are enjoying it so far. The power if our Duramax/Allison was good, but I can feel a difference in this Powerstroke. I think the brakes on it are the most different. Even without towing the GMC was a bear to get stopped. This thing stops like a car! Everyone might have to put up with my signature pic till next spring:-)

The new GMCs have the exhaust brake along with the tow haul braking. Huge difference between my 2002 GMC 2500HD and my 2013 GMC 3500HD. No problem stopping and gives a strong sense of confidence when I am now pulling my Monty. I am sure the new Fords have the same feeling of confidence.

I, too, added a 50 gallon tank to my 2012 F-250 diesel. Then I went over to my Ford dealer to update the onboard computer to reflect the larger fuel tank. Oh no, they said, that would void the warranty. BS, I said, because it's a programmable option. They wouldn't budge. I had to find an independent dealer who flashed the computer for me reflecting the larger fuel tank (and yes it was a chooseable option!), as well as all the latest updates for the computer. The upgrade cost me $100, but I learned something about my dealer!

Anyway, on our way up to Sacramento from the San Diego area in April to pick-up our Monte we averaged 18.90 mpg, without the trailer. This summer we hauled Monte once around the U.S., about 9K miles worth, and averaged 12.26 mpg - a 10% improvement over our 2006 F-250 identically equipped, but towing a 25% lighter travel trailer.

I'm completely impressed with the new 6.7 liter engine, in fact we call the truck "Brutus".

On a side note, I buy a box of DEF at an automotive store and keep it in my truck box until I need it. I used about five gallons of the stuff on the 9K mile trip.
