Talked with several people who live in Gardiner and they all said to go through the park. Many less miles and not a bad route except for traffic.

Yep, go through the park. Roads are good and except for buffalo jams you won't have any problems. You will descend a pretty good grade once heading toward the east exit out of the park. We are in West Yellowstone for the summer and are frequently on the roads in the park.

When you get to Cody, don't miss the Buffalo Bill Museum. You, could probably spend a couple of days there, so plan a little time. The bar in the Irma Hotel was a gift to Buffalo Bill from Queen Victoria, and it's a beautiful thing, if you're into antiques.

We just left Cody. Hadn't been to museum for 35-40 years. A little bigger now (LOL). You can go for 2 days on the admission ticket. We did a couple of 2-3 hour visits on 2 days so we could rest up between (I am not a big museum person, so needed a break). We very impressive for a private organization. Admission is $17 for a senior, I think.

The first time I went to Cody 2 different friends in Wyoming told me I had to see the Cody Museum. So I thought to satisfy them I would spend 15 minutes in the little museum, 2 days I later I had seen it. If you like the old TV westerns, western art, Native American history, and lots more it's a must see. They have one of the largest private gun collection in the US. The Olin Brothers collection, Winchester, Bill Ruger collection.
You just haft to go over to the Irma belly up to the bar for a beer even if you don't drink it.
