3 unit towing ?
Guys I want to tow a small trailer behind my monty with my golf cart. I cant seem to get a strait answer about it I have talked to the scdot, highway patrol, state transport police and cked on the web and have been told it was legal and not legal. I dont get the same answer from anybody. I see some on here towing boats and other things. do any of you folks know if this is Illegal or where to find out for sure. I have friends doing it now and they have never been stopped. I would love to take my cart camping with me. hey!! maybe I am thinking to much. thanks bobby

scductman,
This subject has come up a number of times and is always confusing. As I understand it about half the states allow 3 unit towing and half don't. Generally the western states seem to be more open to the process. I don't know why it is so difficult to get a straight answer from the state people but that seems to be a standard problem.
I know that Steve Reigle used to do multi unit towing and may have some answers for you. There are also at least a couple of other MOCers that tow multiple units. Perhaps one of them will step forward with some answers for you.
Good luck.

I know it is legal to pull behind the Montana in California as a friend is a CHIPS officer and he pulls his skidoes behind his fifth wheel. I have seen the same thing in Texas, but don't know if it is legal. I would think that you would have to check the state restrictions that you are pulling in. I sure would hate to leave my golf cart behind if I was playing.

I tow my Kawasaki Mule on a trailer behind the Montie but I have only done it in Texas where it is legal as long as the total length is under 75 ft. (I think)----

Check in your road atlas and you may find an information chart on laws for towing according to each state. I have seen this in an atlas but I can't remember which one publishes this information. It does have almost any question pertaining to towing and is graphed so that you can see the answer for each state. If you can find one that does have this information in it I would believe that they wouldn't put it in there without having a good source for their information. Hope this helps, maybe someone else may know which one it is published in.

Here is a site that will give you specific state information on rules of the road, including triple towing.

"IF" it is legal in your home state (state of vehicle registration) by recipricol agreement you are allowed to pull thru any state.
Your question should be.."Is 3 unit towing legal in South Carolina?"

The Road Atlas is, "Motor Carrier's Road Atlas," and is available at Barns & Noble and other book stores. It gives bridge heights, weight restrictions, and other important information used by commercial drivers, and me.
Here is a chart for different State Towing
Towing World
Edited: South Carolina does not allow triple towing, according to the chart.

In Va there are some very strict laws--one being that the tow vehicle must be a tractor--as in tractor trailer, and that there is a certain amount of space between the hitch of the tractor and the hitch of the 2nd towed. I believe there is also a weight restriction.
That's what we get for being a commonwealth and not a "state".

In Michigan you're allowed 65' with an RV endorsement. Check with the state's Dept of Motor Vehicle or Secretary of State office. Reciprocity only applies to regular operator's licenses. You are still required to meet all additional liense requirements for the vehicles you are operating in the state that you are operating.

Well shucks, there goes my dream of pulling my 24' boat behind my 38' Montana with a (heck I don't even know how long the dually crew cab is)!!. NOTE: This is entirely tongue in cheek, the boat and trailer weighs in at about 8000 pounds!!

In Michigan you do not have to have an endorsment to tow a trailer (yet). But you do have to get an "R" endorsment to tow double. Also there are length restrictions. With our long trucks and trailers the second trailer would have to be really short. I've heard that there are 30 states that allow towing double but don't know which ones they are. You would have to check state by state. Also, I"m told towing a trailer behind a Montana will void the warranty.

I think I'd be worried about the ability of the Lippert frame to handle the weight and stress.

Here is the trailer you would need to shorten the length. you load from the side. www.blueox.us then click on their trailer section to SPORTCARRIER II. If you want to build your own www.doublehitch.com they have the plans and parts. Good Luck John

Thanks for the info, Dennis. Didn't know MI even offered a RV endorsement. Any value in me getting that if I don't plan on ever pulling double?

Thanks guys for some very good info. I see that it is not legal to tow a trailer in sc but it is in tennesee and thats one of my favorite places. But hey if you look I can't tow my monty in sc anyway because trailers are limited to 35ft so I will have to let it set till I can think of a way to get it out of state LOL. very confusing!!!!!!. bobby

Dave no need for the endorsement if you're not pulling double. Unless you would like to give more money to the state. Incidental, I believe it's legal to tow double with a travel trailer in Wisconsin.

It is legal in CA. to tow doubles. If the first trailer is less than 28' you can tow up to 75'. If your first trailer is over 28' you are limited to 65'.
As for a tractor, your truck is the tractor.
