Brake shoe replacement

Do-it- yourselfers,
I could use some expertise from the vast amount of knowledge of MOCers. I am about to take a 9000 mile western US trip this summer. I will be re-pack my wheel bearings by hand. While the wheels are off, I will be examining my brake shoes as well. I have re-placed the entire brake assemblies about 30,000 miles ago with the #7000 axle, over-sized magnet, self-adjusting plates and springs. The trailer stops great right now. I do NOT want to be replacing these (or have a problem with them) on the road! Does anyone know how thick these brake shoes should be before replacement? Any suggestions (although, I think I know what the answer is going to be)!

If less than 1/16" at thinnest spot, I'd replace them. JMHO

I really doubt they're all that worn after only 9k miles. Check, but they should be fine.

I believe you misread the OPs post. He stated the brakes have 30,000 miles on them and he has a 9,000 mile trip planned.

To the OP, I will be the one to give the response that you expected...convert to hydraulic disc brakes and forget about them for a long time.

Find the specs for the new shoe thickness and take a current measurement at the thinnest spot. If it were me and there's still 25% or better, I would not replace them.

If you do decide to replace the brakes, it will be much less expensive and much quicker to just replace the entire backing plate brake assemblies. Splice two wires, and five nuts to tighten on each position. You should be able to get them for around $85 a piece for Dexter brand, self adjusting, and you will get new everything already assembled.

Thanks, guys! For the $253, I decided to replace the entire 4 brake assemblies. Then, it will be fine for another 30,000 miles! I appreciate your responses and input.
