Although I did not make this modification, there may be some full timers or Winter Texans that could use something like this. It appears to be an easy construction out of PVC and canvass. It is on a Montana.

OK.... I finally got it. Couldn't figure out what "fit" had to do with anything. I guess I'm just getting slower and slower in my old age. I did get the airplane thing.

Looks like a home made bird trampoline to me.....Would have to check with OZZ to see if that makes the AC more efficient or if the guy has a leak.

Looks like there could be a market for it, regardless of whether or not it has a purpose. Just put a couple on your rig, a magnetic sign on the door of your truck with your website, and [s]Presto![/s] oops, can't use that name, it's already a trademark, .......and [s]Viola![/s]...oops, can't use that either,

I'll think of something...

Okay all. A simple lesson plan on shading your air conditioner.

According to the article, shaded air can be up to 6 degrees cooler than direct sun air. Since the average seems to be that if you are 15 degrees cooler on the inside then the outside air, your system is working properly. Now if you shade the air conditioner and get 6 degrees cooler outside, then the inside will be 6 degrees cooler than your neighbor's direct sun air.

Bring on the iced tea!!

I would only undertake such a task if I were to be permanent in a place for several months. To just do it when traveling around week to week may not be worth it. Also, clime and place would determine whether or not I would set it up. Being made of PVC it looks like it would join together quickly. Leave the canvas attached and stored that way, then just put the leg drops in and bungee it down.

Anyhow, just a thought for those so inclined in these endeavors.

My thought was that no larger than the shaded area is, the condenser unit will still draw in just as hot air as if the shade was not there. I could see where parking under a large shaded area might help with efficiency, but not that little cover. JMHO

Anything causing shade on the AC unit will help. Believe me. We've spent a couple of summers in Phoenix, AZ and absolutely anything that puts a shade on your rig helps. If nothing else it keeps the unit from being so hot from the direct rays of the sun.

But no matter how big the shade your AC unit will end up pulling in the air at whatever the ambient temperature is. It just pulls in so much air that there is no way around that. But if you are keeping the direct sun off of the AC unit it will help keep it a bit cooler in 118 degree heat! We were parked under a shed and even that did not keep us from being too hot. We only have one AC. If we planned to spend any more time in that kind of heat we would definitely have another AC installed.

We were there only because our daughter was giving birth to our first grandchild! Otherwise we would NOT have been there!

Keep in mind, the AC may be pulling in air, but only to run it across the condenser and then back out. Nothing is going inside the RV.

The shade may help a little, but I think the AC shroud probably already does as much good as that trampoline. There is a big difference in reduced temperature between standing under an umbrella and standing on the shady side of the house or under an shade tree.

Now, if it had sides, was covered with burlap, and had a little misting sprinkler or some way of wicking water to the burlap, then you might have something that makes a difference. Kind of like turning it into a swamp cooler.

Maybe with rhinestones....yeah, and maybe louvered!...some diamond plate with embedded LED lights would be nice too!
