BLACK PAPER ON CUPBOARD DOORS - Montana Owners Club

When I first heard of this, I thought who cares if you can see what is in the cupboard. However, when I saw it I realized it made the etching on the doors show up better. But I can't get them to stick. What method did some of you use? Did you cut the construction paper to fit just the glass or did you attach to the inside of the door (wood)? Help! I have a whole package of black construction paper (50 sheets) and can't get it to work.

Sue ... I put the paper on the inside and simply scotch-taped it to the frame ... doesn't show from the outside and it has stayed put so far ... about a year.

Are you planning on doing this again to your new 3400RL? Sue had told me about it back when they were up in this neck of the woods. I would really like to see the end results.

Dave ... since this is actually one of the very few original ideas I've ever come up with for the Montana, I will definitely be repeating it in the new house. In fact, the black paper has already been purchased

Have you been in triple digits with it? I think that may be my problem but I'll try again with tape on the wood. I actually cut each piece to the size of the glass and then used those little square things from 3-M. They didn't work and now I don't know what to do with 4 packages of little square things.

Sue ... although the interior stayed at about 85-87, we've been here during several days of 100+ temps. Frankly, I've been surprised that the scotch tape has stuck to the wood. I think on the new one I'll try the clear mailing tape just to have it a bit neater on the inside of the door.

If you still can't get it to work, maybe we can put our heads together at the Rally and see if we can make it look good.

If those sticky square thingies you have are the removeable type, they're good for sticking stuff to other places like the the refrigerator door.

Grandma knows they stick to the 'frig 'cause she's got her personal art gallery stuck there. Looks good, too.

Sue, I'm sorry your square sticky thingies didn't work 'cause that's what I was going to try. This is my next project to try to get done before the rally. If mine doesn't work, I'll consult the experts at the rally.

Dave ... Nope, we've always had black. Carol (CountryGuy) used a gold color and it's pretty. But I think it's kinda neat the way the black paper not only enhances the etching, but also makes it look like the cabinet is empty ... sounds strange, but you'll understand what I mean when you see them.

And yes, Judy ... my gallery will again go up in the new house! I need to get Steve to print up some more though ... I think it's a bit sparse now

Sue, if you can't get the tape to stick and the paper to stay up, try switching to black poster board, cut it to fit and use mirror/picture stays to hold it in. A very small finishing nail, with the end blunted would also work.

Window panes are initially held in place with "glazer's points" - small diamond shaped pieces of metal which can be pushed in with pliers. You sometimes see them on the back of wooden picture frames also. You might try those.

If you folks want tape that stays on-try the aluminum foil tape that is used for heating ducts. Home Depot and others carry it. Pain in the a__ to get the backing off but you can cut it into any size you like/need and it will stick just about anything to anything.

The idea of this was to do something quick and inexpensive. While I agree nails or the little pointy things for glass would work it isn't worth that much trouble and time. Nor is poster board which I did check into. The package of construction paper (50 sheets) was around $3. One piece of poster board is almost that much.

One pair of scissors - had them so long, don't remember $$$
One roll of scotch tape - $1
Totally cool looking cabinet doors in less than an hour - priceless!

Sue, in addition to the recent heat wave with a couple of weeks at 100+, in May we spent two days in Death Valley to 114.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Dave, It's one of those things that you have to see to get the effect. I can't imagine a picture doing it justice.
Just hold up a piece of black fabric to the back of the doors. A T-shirt or anything will give you the effect. Or come through Minneapolis on your way to your Grandma's and I'll show you.

Try using tack-it. I used it to adhere the craft foam I covered the windows by the bed with. You just put it around the edges, let dry to tacky feel then press into place. An inexpensive fix and might work better than scotch tape. It isn't permanent and easy.

Ok, guys, I am on cell phone and this is painful, so, go to my web page, and look around a bit at the top left side, I did a web page on my take of Vicki's really neat paper backing stuff.

I used kinda gold colored drawing paper, THIN!!!, so, I took out, and cut poster board to same size, HOT GLUED the two together and HOT GLUED to the inside of the doors. Held during some close to triple digit temps and we did not have the air on, got right hot in the rig out there sitting in the yard, and I have not found any trouble with my install, yet.

I had originall used tape as Vicki did and had little trouble with that either.

Some people have used white poster board alone, each color of paper gives a different look, pick one! HAHA
