Freezer Crack!

While defrosting the freezer and fridge today Vicki discovered a crack in the freezer inside ceiling, just forward from the rear wall of the freezer cabinet. I have an email in to Dometic so will see if they reply. If not, when we're in Goshen in about 10 days we'll trek the 15 miles to Elkhart, to the Dometic Corp. USA office. The fridge has a 3 year warranty but I'm not sure if this is covered. Bummer.

One crack (this one) is roughly 3 inches long. There's another crack to the right that's maybe an inch.

Steve, never seen anything like that before, not even when my parents and I would camp for several months during the summer. I hope Dometic will take care of it for you!

Good news! Dometic read my email and replied this morning. Here's what they said:

"If the crack is not the result of any force applied to it and it is within the warranty period we will replace the fridge . Third year is a parts warranty."

I assume the part about "parts warranty" means we'll pay labor to replace it.

We'll all be interested to hear how Dometic deals with that one Steve. So far it sounds good--but the proof of the pudding is when you drive away happy. In truth have never seen or heard of such a problem. Keep us posted.

Hey, that's pretty fast action. That's encouraging. Did you tell them about using the hammer to speed up the defrosting? ....Just joking. Hope all goes well.

Cute, Stiles!

I sent another email to Dometic asking where I need to take this thing. In other words, where is a qualified service center. They replied they'll work with anyone I want so long as they're willing to call for authorization. So I can apparently take it to any dealer who feels/is qualified to replace a refrigerator. We'll probably have to wait until we reach Independence, MO, the end of this month. Meanwhile the freezer is keeping the ice cream frozen so I don't think there's a performance problem. Yet.

It would be a shame to lose the ice cream (isn't it at the top of the food pyramid??!!!?). Don't worry too much about the veggies, though. Not much value in broccoli, spinach and cauliflower.

Don't worry about that ice cream, Steve. You can always go to Mel's!

Wow, when you guys do something, you do it in a BIG way. That is some crack. As I recall, you're close to the end of your warranty. Will you still be covered when you get to Independence?

Bigskyguy, I'm with you on that one!

Judy, we took delivery on the rig in late July, 2002, so we still have a little time. Plus, since I documented with them and they acknowledged prior to the end of warranty, it should be covered even if we didn't get there until August or September. If that were to be the case I'd get it in writing that we'll be in after warranty expires. At the moment that should not be a problem. Thanks for asking.
