Kansas to Texas route

Hi folks,
Happy Vets day to all you men and women that served this great country of ours, have a special day today.
We are finally on the road!!! Yea.. In Russell Kansas now, hunkering down for the day being buffeted around by the winds, foolish but not foolish enough to hit the road. Want to go to Amarillo tomorrow and sit in the big chair at The Big Texan.
Anyhoo, which one of these skinny roads should we head south on tomorrow?
Not used to traveling skinny roads, but that is where the best stuff is, I hear.
Looking at the map is no help at all
Thanks!!!

Hi Ozz,I don't know where Russel is but we're heading out from WI to Hutchinson (about 60 mi. west of Witchita) then down to the hill country at Blanco, TX. Hwy.281 is a very good route. It doesn't take you into Amarillo, but if it fits into your route anywhere, I would highly recommend it. Man, I can aready taste that barbecued brisket!! If you have any plans to visit the hill country south or west of Austin, we'd love to meet you. Also , A big howdy and thanks to all my fellow veterans.

Jim,
Don't know where you are headed after Amarillo but we like to travel west to Santa Rosa and the southwest on US 54 & 70 to Las Cruces. Decent 2 lane road all the way. This will take you through Alamogordo and the White Sands N.M. A nice Passport park on the north end of town is Edgington Garden.

I have not traveled that area. But generally speaking, federal (US) highways are good routes. Going thru a new area, I always look at google maps, see what looks to be a good route, then use google street view to see what each highway looks like from the ground. Looking at google maps, there are lots of options from Russell to Amarillo.

Hi Dick,
Stop at the Salt Lick while you are in the area for us, they had some minor flooding there Colleen said, she posted pictures on Fb of it. Would love to meet you as well, some day... We are headed West/South now, at this moment we are getting shook like a rag doll by the winds here in Russell, hovering around freezing actually 40 but feels like 32.
Thanks Ozz

When doing the Google view (good idea BTW), be sure to look in the top left of the picture to see when it was taken. Road conditions may have changed since the picture was taken.

Oz, If it makes you feel any better the winds here in KC, your home base, are constant 37mph with gust to 65mph. Just came in and told Linda I remember it blowing this hard in gust but not constant. It is cleaning the leafs off the trees nicely. Have a safe trip.

Hey Ozz, The Salt Lick is O.K., but overpriced for my lowly budget. We found The Old 300 in Blanco more to our liking. By the way, compared to WI, everything is over priced in TX,but we still love those TX winters, compared to WI. Hang on to your hat out there in KS!!!!

Ozz-- Charlie gave you some good info. We've taken 56 down and 54 back and both are two laners but great travel routes. Both routes are mixed 2 and four lane but the two lanes are good and not as much traffic as some of the other routes in the area.
Might see you down in AZ if we decide to take off again this year.
