Seen plenty of units that do such a thing without a problem. But never done it myself.

On my last truck I installed a front receiver and installed a Cabellas Mount(tower), on the truck top installed a Yakima rack. I carried a 16ft kayak and I had no problems.

We were faced with a similar problem so we bought a Sea Eagle 420X inflatable kayak. It weighs 42# and fits in the basement storage area. They say it can handle up to a class IV river, but not with me in it! Sorry, this probably doesn't help you much.

We had Yakima racks put on our dodge. They're a "sliding 'c' channel", the two crossbars are removable. We carry two 14' kayaks. we have a crew cab, long bed and the yaks never contact the fifth wheel. We travel with them slid just forward enough that without straps they just barely stay on the racks without tipping forward, strap them down with two straps per yak, tie the fronts down with ropes to the tow bars and the backs down to the stake pockets on the front of the bed. They're secure and don't move at all when traveling but we may end up putting on a front receiver hitch and 'goal post' setup to eliminate having to tie down the ends. When loading them without using the fiver, we load them so they're evenly loaded on the crossbars, and just use two staps per yak to secure them. Our rear crossbars have 'hully rollers' on them. Makes loading much easier. The front crossbars have regular landing pads on them.

We have a 10 and 12ft Pelican Kayak and put them on the floor inside Monty. Two slides hold them together on edge nicely and go through door just fine.

We use a system similar to mobil. Carried two 12 footers all over the country.

We have a Dodge Megacab which has a short bed so I put a front receiver on it and a goal post front rack. We carry the kayaks with the front of then just over the goal post works great.

When we don't have the Monty in tow we carry the kayaks over the roof of the truck.

For my front receiver what I did was to have a receiver welded upright to a plate and bolted the plate to my Warn front bumper. Other than a lot of questions about how do I tow anything with a vertical receiver it works great.
