Heat Strips in AC units, Control????

I have a 2955RL with a single 15K BTU AC.and the comfort 2 zone thermostat. I am adding a second AC in the front and want to have electric heat strips in both units. My question is, how do I control the heat strips as primary heat? The thermostat now brings on the central propane heating system. I want to be able to run the heat strips on cool mornings and save the propane system for colder weather.
Thanks
James, Jan and Zoe.

What type of thermostat do you have? There are several that were used at different times and the answer would depend on that.

Also, if you check with Dometic, they will tell you that the heat strips are not to be used in ducted systems. You may be OK with second unit, but you should not be using them in the main unit. (This is according to Dometic, I don't know why they say this, but I wanted to do it, and was discouraged from doing it by that statement).

We had the front A/C installed with the heat strip despite the advice on this forum that it was a waste of money. What we found out was that it was a waste of money.....Duhhhh!!! You won't need a thermostat for the simple reason that to get any heat out of the heat strips you will have to let the unit run continuously. Our heat strip for the front A/C was priced at $79.00. Don't know what the price of yours are, but you would be ahead buying a small ceramic heater or similar and pocketing the difference. My opinion only but I shoulda listened in the first place.

We have a different view than some of the previous posts. Our dealer contacted the AC manufacturer and was told that placing the heat strip in the ducted unit was not a preoblem. We had one put in and it works fine. It does take 3-5 minutes to generate enough heat to be noticed but then works fine. Ours is controlled though the regular thermostat, there was a space on the thermostat marked heat strip.

I would look at the new Dometic heat pumps before I would bother with the heat strip. Same money, much higher btu out of the heat pump and they look nearly identical.

As far as controlling preliminary heat through the roof units before the furnace using the factory thermostat, it is going to be tough. I don't believe the thermostat is capable of multiple staging or distinguishing between standard and auxiliary heat.

In our previous unit, Winnebago Class C, we had the AC with heat pump and loved it. Bulkhead Thermo had 3 selections, air, heat pump and furnance. Heat pump was good down to about 35 deg. then the furnance would kick in should the heat pump not be able to handle the demand. Used the same ducts as the AC. Why would Keystone say not to use the ducts is beyond me.

The heat strips in our front A/C work fine...very easy way to remove the morning chill.
