another front a/c question
I think I've read about this before in a thread about limiting heat loss in the winter, but how could one go about closing off the bedroom a/c vents? With the front a/c on it sure would be nice to block these off and have the extra air flow in the rear of the unit. Once it cools down it would be nice to turn off the front a/c and easily open them back up for normal use. Any ideas?

Check this site out. http://dwincorp.com/index.php?cPath=...ee54b176ac4f4b I had looked at these recently, and may still put a couple of the vents that close off in the upper level of the Mountaineer. There are some detail drawings on the site. I never did measure the a/c duct to see if they would fit (seems they are a little deeper than the factory vent). I suppose they might could be trimmed to fit.

Your A/C unit barely has enough ducting for the size as it is, don't block any vents or you will cause freezing of the evaporator coil, and flood back of liquid refrigerant to the compressor. This will knock the valves out, and possibly break a crankshaft. Remember, the compression of a liquid is 1/2 of 1%.
I installed a bedroom unit. This gives quick cool down, and extra capacity in severe heat.

I would think with the Quick Cool (or whatever they call it) you could close off the bedroom and dump the air in the living room without a problem. Lots more air comes out when I opened that vent (bottom of unit) than comes out of the two round vents in the bedroom. That actually works pretty good to keep the living room/kitchen cool if you close the front of the RV off. It is now a non issue for me with the front unit. Forget about a conversation or listening to the TV with that vent open though!

We operate the main A/c in the quick cool mode all the time.Sure it is noisy it is right above your head a couple of feet away. Stand a couple of feet away from your stick house A/C and check out how quiet it is. With the front A/C we close the vents that face the closet in the 3400 and let all the air blow out the front. You can feel the cold air pouring down the steps. We found that in 100 Degree temps with both A/C running it was almost to cold for us.After we get the entire camper quick cooled using both A/c's we will turn off the main A/c when in the main part of the camper and let the front A/c do the work. When in the bedroom we shut down the front A/c and let the main A/C do the work...... Works for us..

Thanks for the input...I suppose we'll just leave it as is and use it like Rich does. I've also heard that running the main unit on low can cause "ice up". Running on high lessons the chance of icing...don't know if it's true or not?

One problem I've had with my 3500 is that when I run my upstairs A/C, it blows right across the thermostat; which makes the main house unit shut off thinking it is colder inside (I have the CCC). I had to design a cover for the thermostat so the air deflects away from the thermostat and the main unit continues to cool.

Can the bedroom air be connected to the whole house vents on is not plumed that way? The thurmostat has Zones so you can use it for both?

If you run the A/C on low its not if it will freeze up, it's when it freezes up.
Don't ask me how I know this.

Bob, I was told it cannot be done in our Montanas. That thermostat is also the same wall unit that is used in high end 5vers - some of which have 2 furnaces even. They just use them for our Montanas. However, maybe I'm mistaken and someone here can correct me. I don't believe there is any MOCer out there that has two functional "zones" in their unit.

I agree, it would require a remote sensor as well.
