Trip to Bar Harbor Maine

Does anybody out there have a suggestion for a route to and from Salt Lake City to Bar Harbor Maine. We would like to include Mt. Rushmore on the way there.

All I can offer is that I-80 from Chicago east is terrible. Rough road and expensive. We paid about $150 in tolls to get from there to Virginia, but probably no way to avoid it.

Best route is probably I-90. At least to Albany NY, then 87N thru the Adirondacks and across Vermont and NH into Maine. If you've never been through this area, it's a good route to follow, with a lot to see. I-90 is a toll road and not cheap, but most direct.
