A sad near miss
This one saddened my heart as the beautiful tree had almost a 60 ft umbrella. Could have been a lot worse though. I start tackling this one tomorrow if the ground isn't too soft to bring the tractor in.

Wow !! That was close.
We have an oak in the backyard that has a fork at the base. One side leans towards where the rig is parked. It's tall enough, the top may reach the rig if it breaks off. I put a 2" tow strap around the trunks about 20' up. Its on my "to do" list to cut that side down. I'll have to climb up in it and top it first, then drop it.
I'll move the rig first, just in case ...

Looks like you got a lot more freezing rain than we did. We got some rain when the temp was just barely at freezing temp. But mostly snow and some sleet.

Holy cow that was a close call on your covering and truck. It's looking a little chilly your way. What temperatures are you dealing with?

Been There! In an ice storm we lost a very large oak branch a few years back that perfectly missed our deck, house, fence, and 5er. It could have hit any of them. It was like God set it down nicely between all of them.
It's beautiful, but dangerous and potentially destructive. I'm glad you were spared as well.

We had a big white oak on the property three little boys played under 70 years ago. A wind storm came through and took the top of it down. It was 120 feet under the canopy. Another is taking its place but will never be as big as that one was. A lot changes in 70 years.
We had a big oak about ten feet from the house with a two foot fork leading toward the house so we put a half inch steel cable to keep that fork from falling on our house. The force from the tree moving broke that cable. We had it cut down and the stump is 5 feet across in two directions.

Lee - that looks like a multi-trunk live oak. Just curious - see the dark areas I circled in the pic below? It looks like maybe the Feb 2021 ice storm may have stressed and cracked the trunks a bit, and last weeks ice finished it off. The dark areas would have been fresh wood back then, but the tree started trying to heal over the exposed wood.
On the bright side…you are looking at next year’s fire wood. I pay $275 for a half cord of split live oak down here.
I see pine trees in the background…how did they fair? Growing up in Henderson TX we had pine trees and ice storms always broke their limbs. Maybe that is why pine trees don’t ever have lower limbs…the ice storm of ‘52, ‘65, ‘72 etc etc took ‘em out.
