Fuel mileage

On our recent trip to the SouthEast I kept my fuel receipts to check mileage. These are NOT estimates and are NOT based on vehicle computer readout. They represent the odometer reading and actual gallons at each stop.

Magee, Miss. 348.5 miles, 28.7 gal = 12.14286 MPG
Panama City, FL added 19.992 gal (not a fill up, too expensive!)
Evergreen, AL 21.07 gal TOTAL (with above) 41 gal 546.5 miles = 13.309 MPG
Stone Mt., GA 26.5 gal, 333.2 miles = 12.55889 MPG
Lavonia, GA 19.919, 262.8 miles = 13.19343 MPG
Montgomery, AL 29.202, 362.2 miles = 12.40326 MPG
Tallula, LA 24.0376, 304.7 miles = 12.6759 MPG

(Last leg home is NOT included--from Tallula, LA to Ore City, TX)
Total miles up to Tallula - 2155, total fuel cost $412.28

We found diesel prices all over the ball park. Highest, I think, was 2.399 in Florida and cheapest was in Northeast Georgia at 1.999. Our price here at home is now $2.079. Of the prices we actually paid on this trip the average worked out to $2.16

Good numbers, Padre. Thanks for the report. One thing might make it even more meaningful -- what speeds did you normally run and were you mostly on interstates? Thanks.

Good questions, Steve, but the answers to these are not so easy to document. As for speed, I'd say between 65 and 70 MPH: 70 on some stretches of interstate and downhill. But that is a pretty consistent speed as my miles covered in a day would support. I manage to avoid interstates, but there are times when that is so obviously the best route [example:Atlanta, GA to Longview, TX -- look at the map]. Off Interstate: Vicksburg to Mobile, Pensacola to Panama City, Panama City to Evergreen, AL, Lavonia, GA to Meridian, MS [on return]. All other on Interstates on this recent trip.

Padre, that's plenty good enough. Just wanted to know when I compare my numbers if it's apples or oranges. I've heard one person say they get xx mpg towing and other scratch their head and wonder why they get less mileage. Maybe the first guy drives 55 and the others drive 70. You got some good numbers, particularly for that speed. Thanks for the info.
