Ice is nice...

When a guy can get it...
First Target Emerson ice machine broke after 2 months, second one lasted about as long.. got the newest replacement today after our nice meeting with the super Peeps at MOC Apache Junction BBQ fest, plugged it in... no workee...
So... back to Target tomorrow for the fourth..
I bought the extended warranty, but they break so fast, the store warranty covers them.
Why me....

I thought I'd get one but after researching; reading the reviews and so on and so forth, I learned that the average life of a portable ice maker is 5 months! NOT worth the hassle in my books when I can get 10lbs. of cubes anywhere for $1.39 or so. Too bad cause it would be handy given the amount of ice our Monty consumes.

Same with me, research and talking to the folks at the camping at the Corps campground convinced me to stay with doing it the old fashioned way. Would be nice if they lasted longer, however.

Why me you asked?
Well maybe the ice makers think that you’re going to re-engineer them for some kind of mod or stick them out in the desert somewhere waiting for some catch. Or, maybe they just get nervous around you and stress out!

That is odd, I have two, one a Target Emerson and the other a Home Dept Magic Chef (I did replace a limit switch on this one), and both of them have been chuggin along just fine. The Magic Chef is over three years old and the Emerson is over a year old. One of them works non-stop at the house year round and the other is used primarily in the rig. This winter the Emerson has been going non-stop since November at the house in addition to it's summer duty, the Magic Chef ran non-stop for two years and is merely on relief duty now. Maybe I am ice-maker blessed, can't explain it, but I refuse to pay $4 for a bag of ice, and at around a $120 each it doesn't take very many bags of ice (30 or so) to justify the purchase.

After a few Emerson/Magic Chef ice makers, we finally bought a Dometic branded one. So far, so good.

I musta bought mine at the same place as Exnavydiver. Too lazy to look at the brand but ours is still kicking too after 6 years. We got ours on sale for about $110 so it's paid for itself. In fact, we bought it because the fridge went kaput on the first day of a 7 day RV trip when our '06 was just four months old. We turned the fridge into a giant cooler using the ice created by this ting and the ice machine ran constantly for 6 days!

The fridge has been fixed long since and the ice maker hasn't had to work near as hard and it's still going great.

1st one was an "off brand" I bought at Menards, lasted for 3 years of constant use before it died. Replaced it with a Magic Chef. We will not be without a portable ice maker, we go through a lot of ice for our tea!

I guess we're lucky like some others on here. We've had our Magic Chef for 4 years without any problems.
