Choosing the correct Sailun

I'm a retired Army Band Director and know nothing about replacing the Sailuns on my Montana 3811MS. Original tires need replacing. S 637 ST 235/80RG L.R.G.

Pics attached.
Are these still a good choice?

I have the new replacement tires in the cart at Simple Tire .com. for $150 apiece.
Should I pull the trigger? Any known problems with Simple Tire.com?

Please and thanks.

Steve,

Those are good tires.

Simple tire is a good place to buy - they sell a lot of tires so yours should be fresh. Sometime they have a local shop that can mount them for you or you may need to find a place on your own. I would sort that out before ordering so you can ship them direct to the installer.

Simpletire seems to be a good source, but you may find they've been sitting on the shelf. Curious, are yours aging out, or is the tread worn down?

These are the original tires when i purchased the Montana in March 2018. They show signs of wear on the outsides of each tire. Not sure if this is normal or not.

Hard to say. Edge wear can result from underinflation.

Good point on the inflation. What PSI are you running in them. They are rated for 110psi. I run mine 105-107psi.

I had no problem having Discount Tire mount mine for me.

The very outside (and inside) edges of the Sailuns and Goodyears will tend to look worn compared to the rest of the tread after a few years. This usually due to wear of turning left and right, particularly tight turns to enter/exit a campsite. There is extra rubber there to allow for the expected wear. This is usually no more than 1" in from the edge. If the wear is visible more than that or it affects one tire more than all the others, then alignment might be an issue. Two years on a Sailun should not be enough time to wear them out.

Correct air pressure is one of the first things I things on my departure checklist. I've run then constantly in accordance with the sticker on the front left of the 5th wheel. 110 (105-110). I've read numerous sad articles about blowouts and vehicle damage due to over and underinflation.

Steve, you might consider keeping some good UV protectant on your tires and covering them when stored. The sun can wreak havoc on tires. There are several good options to choose from. I am currently using this from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I have also used this from Chemical Guys with good results - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you decide on the S637 Sailuns, they will more than likely be made in Vietnam instead of China. Personally, I see this as a positive.

Why more US manufacturers are not in the ST tire game is mind boggling to me. Huge number of camper, boat, equipment and utility trailers on our highways. Overwhelming majority of them with Chinese made tires on them. US manufacturers dominate the auto tire industry. Seems to me they could do the same in Trailer tires.

SpeedyTire.com has a great price on Sailuns right now. I bought five new ones from them and they shipped to me in four days.

That does seem to be a bit early for replacement. We have a 2017 model 3810MS (same as yours except RV style refrigerator) and our Sailuns are still in great shape. We run at 105 to 110 PSI on pressure. So far no problems with them. Army band director? Good for you. And, I can't resist.......GO NAVY!!!

Don't the tire manufacturers say NOT to use any spray protectants? Most say at best it is not needed and at worst the spray formula could potentially interfere with the UV protectants embedded in the tires.
EDIT add link: https://www.consumerreports.org/tire...-looking-good/

OTOH, I do believe that UV is damaging, so anytime our unit is parked for a length of time, I do put covers on the tires.
YMMV

Don't over look your local independent tire dealers for Sailun tires. Not the chain stores but the local independents.

I called around and found three dealers within 20 minute drive from my home that could get them. Price varied from 175.00 to 195.00 mounted and balanced per tire.

I laid eyes on 8 new S637 size 235/80/16 last week. All manufactured after the 30th week of 2020. All were made in Vietnam. Dealer said they started seeing them made in Vietnam about mid 2020.

Walmart also carries Sailun tires and had the best price last fall. I had checked all the on line stores like Simple tire and others, so don’t forget Wally World when shopping for Sailuns. Just an FYI.

I don't see any reason to replace those tires. The edge wear is normal and the tread depth looks great.

My tire shop in KC uses ITD as their source for tires. Used them for years and always get relatively new manufactured tires. My shop will do the install on my 5'er right on their drive. My web search shows four shops in Topeka that use ITD. Might not hurt to give one a call and see what they can do for you. https://www.bing.com/search?q=Indepe...FE2FA9792FB4C9

tires on my 2018 are doing fine. Rig purchased in July 2017.
Had to replace one tire that wore prematurely do to a bent axle. Shopped around and Walmart had the best price. Beat Simple by around $5 or $10 as I recall. And then the order was filled by Simple Tire.
