Unfriendly hiker

He didn't seem very friendly so we didn't stay and hang with him

Actually, Joyce got a different picture of him that shows a bulge about half way down. He must have had mouse about a week ago.

Very true, but when you start to get tired late in the day that rattle sound will get the blood flowing again. Despite what they say, old white guys can jump.

I guess we all view mother natures critters in a different way, I would consider myself fortunate to see this big guy/gal and be able to photograph it.
I see no reason to kill something just because we are afraid of them or assume they are of no value in the balance of nature. I hope anyone who would kill this magnificent creature would stick around and balance out the equation by also shooting the vermin he/she would no longer be able to consume.
Why not take your picture, leave it minding it's own business, go your way and allow him/her to do the same. JMHO

Also very true. I had to straighten out a Boy Scout camp years ago when they had "removed" all the snakes. There were rodents everywhere and in everything. Kids getting shots because of rodent bites, rodents in the dinning hall in broad daylight etc. We had to reintroduce snakes, poisonous and otherwise, and teach the kids and the adults how to coexist.

Rattlers are up on the mountain here. When I find one I take a stick and toss them out of the way. I know the next car to come by will have the rattlers when they leave. Once I tried to get one to bite at a stick and couldn't. When I encounter one in the woods I just step around it and go on.

Dick, two years ago, I stepped on one almost that size! Hiking in parking lot at Sacramento International Airport. A Parking lot! Yes, stepped out of my Jeep and by grace of God, caught him three inches behind his head! In middle of paved parking lot! Felt I stepped on something, and it struck my boot twice! I shook for a week! BTW 265 lbs is too much weight for snake! Security guards put him out of misery! I still have night mares... Funny thing, I live in major rattlesnake country...never saw one in the wild till then! Since then nearly a dozen on my land. My wife works at Hospital in Redding, lots of people get bit every summer, most moving wood. The population here is considered out of control. Show up and breed like rabbits. While I understand the co-exist issue, many of us have introduced more "King Snakes" into our property. Best method of control I know about! We now have three in and around our home!

What a great solution. When there aren't other snakes to eat the King snake will eat any rodents you may have. My guess would be that the reason for the snake problem is that the habitat for their natural predators has been removed, but the mice and rats persist so the snakes have food but few enemies.

If They do not bother me I do not bother them. We had them nest under our porch and in the coal pile at our Hunting camp In NW PA and if it came down to me or the snake it lost. Mostly they let you alone unless you stepped on them.
