Tire Replacement
Question to the tire guys. I have two tires on my trailer that are 5 years old. I have considered replacing them this year but am also considering replacing them next year. What say you?
The tires have plenty of tread on them and look good, as far as I can tell.

Mike, I would recommend going to a reputable tire shop to have them checked by a proffessional. In your area that would most likely be Les Schwab, or if you don't mind driving over to Hermiston, Jim at Commercial Tire is very good. Actually it's in Power City between Umatilla and Hermiston. The tires are getting old and should probably be replaced, but getting someone to look at them would be better than guessing.

Thanks for the input. I dropped by Les Schwab today to get a price estimate. They still need to see the trailer tires to see if I need to replace them. I may tow my rig over there this weekend. Commercial tire? I don't remember that one. I may have to look into it. They are only 30 miles or so away.

Mike, Commercial Tire is on 395 between Umatilla and Hermiston on the East side of the road. After you cross the river, exit onto US 730 toward Walla Walla. When you get to the top of the hill, turn right at the light onto 395, and go about 3 or 4 miles. We did a lot of business there when we were building the feedlot at Boardman, and got to know them pretty good. Jim is a good guy and will treat you right. Nothing against Les Schwab, we just couldn't ever get them to deal with us the way we like to deal.

Mike,
I think it is a great idea to get the tires checked out. All four of my blowouts were on tires that looked ok and had lots of tread. Inspection by a tire expert may help avoid the undesireable.

What kind of tires are the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A All-Season tires? I can get the LT265/75R-16 for 158.06 ea. This is $60 less than what Les Schwab wants to see me.

Mike, the BFG Commercial T/A is a good tire. In my opinion it's not the best, but it is good. The price you were quoted is on target. However, the size may give you a problem as the 265 is 30 mm wider than the 235. If you have plenty of clearance, then no problem, and the 265 has a higher load rating than the 235.

Hey! You know that size caught my attention when I saw the quote, but, now that you bring it up, my memory says that the trailer size is LT235/85R16. I will have to check tomorrow when it is light and I can read the tire. I may have to get back to you guys with a new quote. I don't think a wider tire will fit.

Turned out it was LT2365/85R16. The price on that tire is $151.19. I am heading out tomorrow to Newport, OR and will be back Monday. Think I may get two tires to replace the 5 year old tires before I head out Thursday for the Lake Siskiyou Ralley.

After 20/20 aired their piece on tire dating practices, if I were buying today, I would check the date of manufacture on any new tires I bought to make sure I was getting a new tire, not just an unused tire.

I would hate to think that a good reputable dealer would sell a tire that was outdated without telling you. If you were buying it for a farm wagon, I could understand but not for a recreational vehicle.
